The Pirates placed Charlie Morton on the 15-day DL today (retroactive to the 30th) with “shoulder inflammation.” Juan Cruz will rejoin the team (from the restricted list) to take Morton’s roster spot, meaning lefty Doug Slaten gets to stick around for now.
As I suspected in my post the other day comparing Morton and Kevin Correia, this may be a bit of a fudged injury by the Pirates to get Morton some time in the minor leagues to work on some things. He doesn’t have any options left, so this would be the only way to do that. Morton said he felt fine after his last start, but there have plenty of indications that he isn’t back to full strength after his hip surgery this offseason.
In the meantime, the Pirates may slot in Brad Lincoln (or someone from AAA) for a spot start next week, although with yesterday’s day off and another day off after this weekend’s series, they may not need a fifth starter until Jeff Karstens comes back (he’s making a rehab start in Indy tonight). I’m sure we’ll find out more about the Bucs’ plans over the weekend.
