A Red Sox Fan From Pinstripe Territory:
I like to joke about how Yankees fans/announcers occasionally act like the on-field successes of Derek Jeter have an impact on world events. But every once in a while, someone actually crosses into that territory. In a piece that mentions Adolf Hitler, Muhammed Ali, Jackie Robinson, and the Civil Rights Movement, Wallace Matthews writes that Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech "could well have been" about then-unborn Derek Jeter. But the most appalling part of the article is when Matthews claims that not even Red Sox or Mets fans can hate Derek Jeter.I suppose that's why we boo him every single time his name is announced. This goes along with Michael Kay's theory that "boos on the road are the same as cheers at home." Classic "the Yankees win no matter what" behavior. This is a team that plays their victory song even after they lose, remember. What causes this mentality? Are people just so afraid of failure or disaster or...

David Price Says Arbitration Money Can Help Him Buy a Wing in Derek Jeter’s Mansion
Arbitration time can be an exciting time of the year for some players and a frustrating one for others. For guys like David Ortiz who have been looking for a long-term extension but keep agreeing on a one-year salary, it’s tedious. For a young player like David Price who is just now starting to make his millions, it’s fun. Price just reached a one-year deal with the Rays...

Derek Jeter was honored on Wednesday night with the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award, sponsored by the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity, in recognition of his charitable work.
Tim Lincecum shatters Derek Jeter’s record, asks Giants for a $21.5 million salary in 2012
Of all the different times of the baseball year, arbitration season has to be my least favorite. It's not even close, really. There's way too much sound and way too little fury as players, teams and agents do a dance that will most likely end with an inevitable and snooze-inducing "so-and-so avoids arbitration" headline. I know a lot of people like to get all hot...
Derek Jeter Will Break Another of Mickey Mantle’s Records in 2012
How will the Yankee captain (and the media) react to the dubious record that awaits?
PED injustice and the Hall
Hall of Fame vote is frustrating. Something is wrong with either the procedure or the people involved in the voting. This became clear when Barry Larkin’s deserving, and late, induction became a second tier story to who did not make it and the ongoing assault about the role of steroids or PEDs*.
* For the remainder, I’ll refer to PEDs to include steroids, HGH, etc.—anything...

Martin Luther King Jr.'s Spirit Personified by Bill Russell, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali (Photos)
Before Martin Luther King Jr. declared "I have a dream," Jackie Robinson shattered segregation in Major League Baseball by suiting up for the Brooklyn Dodgers. While Americans spent Monday recalling the King's impact, they may also remember that King's dream was personified in athletes such as Robinson. Sam Cunningham showed Southern college football coaches that...
Willie O’Ree still spreading love of hockey 54 years after breaking NHL’s color barrier
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- When Willie O'Ree stepped on to the ice for the Boston Bruins at the Montreal Forum the night of Jan. 18, 1958, it didn't even hit him that he was doing something historic. Despite it being his first game in the NHL, nerves weren't much of a factor, either.
Playing at the Forum wasn't a new experience for O'Ree. Years in junior hockey and a couple...
