PLAYERS: Jeff Samardzija
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
There hasn’t been too much to cheer about on the north side of Wrigley, as the Chicago Cubs have been at the bottom of the NL, something many had predicted at the start of the season. The Cubs are off to their worst start since 2002, and despite the recent 5 game-winning streak, there isn’t a whole lot to brag about. The Cubs are dealing with a couple changes at the closer role after the failure of reliever Jose Veras. Veras was designated for assignment after being pushed back to a middle reliever role, leaving the young Hector Rondon as the new 9th inning man for the Cubs. Rondon has 2.45 ERA and has saved 7 games this season with 9 opportunities. Rondon doesn’t seem like a permanent solution to the situation, and now we have to wonder if President of Operations Theo Epstein will look to correct that with a mid-season acquisition. The shining examples on the team might be players like Jeff Samardzija. Don’t let Samardzija’s record fool you, he has the 7th best ERA in NL at 2.54 and has been one of the more consistent starters in the rotation. Also starting to pick up in the order is starter is Jason Hammel, who has a 6-3 record and a 2.53 ERA in 12 starts this season. While Samardzija isn’t getting the run support he deserves for his starts, Hammel ha been doing well for himself and has proved himself a big help in the fairly poor rotation, as struggles in the ERA category start to haunt pitchers like Travis Wood (5.04) and Edwin Jackson (4.59). Jake Arietta has also started to show promise since coming off the DL earlier this year, going 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in 7 starts. On the offensive side, guys like Anthony Rizzo, Junior Lake and Starlin Castro have been leading the way for the Cubs. Rizzo leads the Cubs in average (.276), on-base percentage (.403), home runs (12) and RBIs (33). Lake and Castro have had their recent hot streaks as of late too, making them so the key offensive players as well. After all this, the Cubs are still far from contenders though, as they place last in most categories in the league. The team together is 29th in batting average, 27th in runs, and 27th in on-base percentage. In pitching, the Cubs are 10th in ERA, but are 28th in saves, recording 11 saves in 23 opportunities. It’s clear hear that the Cubs need to make major changes at the offensive level, needing to score a lot more runs to even show a little progression in what seems to be another re-building season. Whether the Cubs will make the changes to the offense with new deals, call-ups from young prospects (look for Javier Baez to get the send-up sometime this season) or in free agency, major changes need to be seen. As for the closer role, Rondon is not a solution, and the Cubs need to make changes with new talent if they want to get more saves for later. Overall, I will give the Cubs a D for the 2014 campaign so far, as there are really no signs of contention with teams like the Brewers or Cardinals, but there are still signs that the Cubs can make some improvements The post Chicago Cubs: Grading the first third of the season appeared first on isportsweb.

Chicago Cubs: Why Jeff Samardzija has been the team’s biggest surprise

A casual baseball fan may glance at the win-loss record of Chicago Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija and may jump to the premature conclusion that he’s not that good of a pitcher this season. The only thing is, though, upon an inspection of the other statistics, that simply could not be further from the truth. Granted, he hasn’t been perfect this season for the North Siders...

Chicago Cubs prospect profile: Kyle Hendricks

In the midst of what appears to be another non-intriguing season for the Chicago Cubs, most of the focus is being placed on the players in their minor league system. Several of these players – such as Kris Bryant and Javier Baez – garner a lot of publicity because of their superstar-status projections, but it is actually some of the prospects that are not as hyped that can...

Pirates 6, Cubs…screw it, here’s some Kris Bryant stuff for you

Let’s be honest. You don’t care about yesterday’s game. Two bad teams played, and the slightly less bad team won. Castro finished a triple short of the cycle, and the rest of the team sucked (as a team, they drew 0 walks). Who cares. Instead, I’m going to try to describe how awesome Kris Bryant is. I normally hate the Player A vs. Player B comparisons, but I think this one...

Chicago Cubs: All the Right Pieces

#164290615 / gettyimages.com The Chicago Cubs have failed to win the World Series since 1908, and they have not captured the pennant since 1945. They have squandered in the shadows of NL Central powerhouses, like the St. Louis Cardinals. But, ever since Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have taken over in the front office, they have given the Windy City a sliver of hope. The Cubs have...

Chicago To Build A Floating Island With Dome?

Posted to Random ShizAccording to the Chicago Tribune, an engineer has pitched the idea to build a floating island off of the Chicago shoreline called Breakwater. “The total price tag for the floating attraction will likely be around $23 million, D’Arcy said. Only a portion of that — $30,000 to start — will be sought on Kickstarter. He hopes to raise the rest through more...

Jeff Samardzija, three Cubs home runs beat Marlins 5-2

The last-place Cubs are trending upward, but manager Rick Renteria insists he is focused more on the process than the results. The Cubs won their fifth straight game Saturday, trumping the Marlins 5-2 as Junior Lake hit two home runs and Jeff Samardzija pitched seven strong innings to earn his second victory. The Cubs have won five in a row for the first time since May 26-31 of...

Chicago Cubs In A Dog Fight

Posted to Chicago CubsThe Chicago Cubs will appear before the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals on June 20 to fight for their proposed “free” remote parking lot located in the North Center neighborhood. The Chicago Cubs are currently operating the lot using a special-use permit that is about to expire. The problem with the parking lot is the increase in traffic for the neighborhood...

The Chicago Cubs Are Losing To The Challenge System

Posted to Chicago CubsThe Chicago Cubs haven’t done a great job with the new challenge system in baseball, reports indicate they are over using it and failing. The Cubs made 23 challenges, winning 12. Their opponents made 10 challenges, winning six. That means the Cubs ‘‘won’’ 16 times and ‘‘lost’’ 17. (Sun-Times) The league average is 47%. While the Cubs have acknowledged...

Cubs Hammel a valuable trade chip?

Trade buzz regarding the Chicago Cubs normally begins with Jeff Samardzija, who may be the best pitcher in baseball with a 2-5 record. But Theo Epstein could have more than one starter to peddle as July 31 approaches. Jason Hammel has tossed seven scoreless innings in each of his last two starts to lower his ERA to 2.53, a figure slightly better than Samardzija’s 2.54. Peter...

Let us proclaim today Anthony Rizzo Day

Presented without comment… Anthony Rizzo finished the game (a Cubs victory) with a slash line of .284/.406/.514, having gotten three hits and driving in three of the Cubs’ seven runs.  Those three hits were all for extra bases and included this: Your browser does not support iframes. Cubs Time to Act Is Now

Fresh off of a five game winning streak, the Chicago Cubs have now lost two games in a row. They have gone back to looking like the team they have been all season before taking advantage of the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins. Optimistic hopes that were flying high, are now starting their descent back to the reality that this is another lost year in which there are few reasons...

Cubs Fan Retrieves Dropped Foul Ball, Gives It To Young Marlins Fan (Video)

Wrigley Field played host Sunday to a nice little display of fan sportsmanship. It took place during the fifth inning of the Chicago Cubs eventual 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna lifted a foul ball into the seats along the right field line, and one Cubs fan, after initially getting a hand on it, bobbled it away. The guy clearly wasn’t happy, but...

Cubs Have the Power

This is mostly an excuse to post some power-ish memes, but unless you’ve been sticking your head in the sand, Kris Bryant has been destroying baseballs with impunity and Javier Baez looks like he’s starting to wake up.  Even Starlin Castro uncorked a no-doubt long-ball tonight. For reference…   Javy Baez goes deep! He smacks a 2-out solo home run for his 9th HR of the season...

Rizzo’s HR, two doubles lead Cubs to 7-3 win

Gregory Polanco, one of the top prospects in baseball, had barely settled into his position in right field for his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night when the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo air mailed him a welcome-to-the-big-leagues postcard – sending a two-run home run directly over Polanco into the back row of the right-field bleachers. Rizzo added a pair of doubles and...
