The Chicago Cubs may have won in some way this year, in the off-season of course. Major League Baseball now has a new “posting” system for Japanese players who are trying to come over and play in the states. The new system requires any MLB team to pay the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) team no more than $20 million to negotiate on a player. This could be potentially huge for the Chicago Cubs in increasing their chances in landing Masahiro Tanaka. Chicago Cubs Interested In Masahiro Tanaka Tanaka posted a 24-0 record and a sparkling 1.27 ERA for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, who then went on to win their leagues championship. The young right hander is only 25-years old and fits the mold that Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstein have laid out for the Cubs. The majority of scouts think Tanaka is a solid No. 2 starter, while others feel he can be a great No. 1 from the jump. Regardless of where he would fit in the rotation, if the Cubs are able to land him, it immediately brightens their future! Is Ma-Kun, as he is known in Japan, really worth it? The short answer is Yes. – Steve Wulf, ESPN.com With the success Yu Darvish has had for the Texas Rangers in a tough American League, this signing should be a no brainer for the Cubs. Out bidding other teams is the only problem the Cubs should run into when trying to acquire Tanaka. The question is not whether he is worth the millions of dollars it will cost to sign, but rather will he be available? The Cubs have to be willing to pay $100+ million on top of the $20 million that it will take just to negotiate with him. The 2014 season most likely is not going to be pretty for the Cubs. Why not just sign this one YOUNG talent, bring up the prospects from AA and AAA and let them grow together.
