The misery of the 2013 season is finally over. The Cubs now look to 2014 to improve.  (Photo Credit: Lenny Ignelzi) The Chicago Cubs finished a lackluster 2013 season with a 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  Sunday’s loss capped off a sweep for the Cardinals, a series in which they clinched the National League Central crown and captured the best overall record in the National League. Unfortunately for the Cubs, during the last two weeks the club has seen three different clubs clinch significant postseason positions.  First, the Braves clinched the National League East, then the Pirates clinched a wild card spot and then the Cardinals clinched the National League Central as well as the National League’s best record.  These young Cubs have seen much in the 2013 season, mostly negative and very few positives. However, there is some mercy in the fact that the 2013 Cubs will not have to take the field again.  The misery that the team suffered through is at an end.  Now the club plans for 2014.  It seems unlikely the Cubs will contend next season but odder things have happened.  Some baseball analysts believe the club may be more willing to open up their wallet this season to put the Cubs into contention faster, however, only time will tell. After the Cardinals completed the sweep of the Northsiders and ended the Cubs season with their 96th loss, questions of Dale Sveum’s future as Cubs manager are being questioned.  Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are rumored to be making a decision as soon as Monday on Sveum’s future with the club. The Cubs collapsed in their final fifteen games of the season taking only three victories to twelve losses.  Many of these losses came against contending clubs that had something to play for.  With such an abysmal record in the final fifteen games, the Cubs only managed to win five more games then the 101-loss 2012 club.  This very marginal improvement from last year has placed Sveum squarely on the hot seat. As the club continues their massive rebuild, it’s all pure speculation as to what the Cubs will do in the upcoming off-season but if the club continues to only improve by five wins a season, it’s going to be a very long rebuild.
