Despite being at the top of the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox could not catch up to the Kansas City Royals this weekend.

Another no-decision for Quintana

After dropping the first two games, the Sox only managed three hits in Sunday’s contest. In fact, the Royals’ starter Jeremy Guthrie had a no-hitter going until the seventh. Paul Konerko’s infield single put an end to that, but the Sox bats were otherwise very quiet. Their two runs came off the bat of Dewayne Wise and were the result of an error by Eric Hosmer, the Kansas City first baseman.

Conversely, the Royals’ offense managed 11 hits. Unfortunately for them, this only resulted in five runs but it was enough to bring home the victory. With the game scoreless in the sixth inning, Quintana intentionally walked Billy Butler (for the second time this weekend) and Perez smacked a two-run double down the left field line. Walking Butler seemed like a good move in both cases, but Perez punished Sox pitchers in each occurrence.

The defeat could have been more decisive if not for some flashy defensive plays by the White Sox defense. In the second inning, Gordon Beckham threw out Mike Moustakas at home after fielding a ground ball behind home plate. Later on in the game, Dayan Viciedo got an outfield assist by throwing out Johnny Giovatella as he tried to stretch a single into a double.

Jose Quintana (5-2) continues to have strong outings, but lack of offensive support is making it hard to get wins. He has started 15 games this season and has only received a decision on seven of them. It is good to know that he will provide a reliable arm during this crucial final month, but the Sox bats need to get behind him. The tight division race could still go either way and every game has the highest importance.

Luckily for the Sox, Detroit lost twice this weekend so their division lead is still at 1 1/2 games.
