PLAYERS: Gavin Floyd
TEAMS: Chicago White Sox

Albert Pujols has only hit two home runs this whole season…and one of them was against the White Sox. In the third inning, Pujols smashed Gavin Floyd’s fastball to deep left center. The three-run shot gave the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim the 4-2 lead and they never gave it up.

Gavin Floyd has been superb lately, only giving up 17 hits in his last 27.2 innings. Tonight broke that streak, however, as  he gave up seven runs to the Angels in six innings. Left fielder Vernon Wells had a two-run home run of his own in the sixth inning.

Great time to remember your swing...

The White Sox continued their lack of clutch, going 0-4 with runners in scoring position while only managing two runs on their ten hits. Dayan Viciedo continued to make good contact with three hits and one run batted in. The other run came home with a rare RBI from Gordon Beckham. He only has nine RBIs on the season and his average still sits at a very sub-par .195.

In addition to the White Sox offensive struggles, the pitching hasn’t been on track either. The club has given up 31 runs in the last four games, which is unfortunate considering the Sox had one of the best team ERAs in the American League only a few weeks ago.

Something good to take away from the last couple games is that A.J. Pierzynski seems to be coming out of his recent slump. When he went 5-5 yesterday, he hit the ball more than he has in the last ten games. Paul Konerko continued putting up ridiculous numbers going 3-4 against the Angels. He hit his seventh homer yesterday and his average has been holding around .350 for the last few weeks.

The Sox will close out their two-game set with the Angels tomorrow night before coming home to play the Chicago Cubs. This weekend is very important to the Sox fans of Chicago so and a win tomorrow can put the team in a solid state of mind. Heated rivalries aside, the White Sox are the superior team according to the numbers. Hopefully the Sox can add to their struggles on Friday.

10-Year Old Haley Smilnow Interviews A.J. Pierzynski on Chicago, Catching, Controversy, and the ’05 Championship

[Editor's note: A few days ago I received an email from Marc Smilnow on behalf of his daughter Haley. In it, he told me about a family trip last summer during which the Smilnows took in 26 MLB games over 30 days at seven different ballparks. Along the way, Haley caught the journalism bug and interviewed Curtis Granderson, AJ Pierzynski, and others. Her work was published in...

This ball wouldn't stretch for Hawk Harrelson

I wish we had every close Chicago White Sox loss saved for posterity thanks to the play by play antics of the one and only Hawk Harrelson.  Last we saw Hawk, he was observing a minute of silence for a White Sox walk off loss in Detroit.  Today, the southsiders found themselves trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth hosting the Tigers with runners on second and third and 2 outs...

Image: Hilarious Father/Son Combo Fan Signs at White Sox-Tigers Game

One of my favorite people to follow on Twitter is @WorldofIsaac. So you should follow him. Now. My latest reminder of his real-time Twitter greatness was the posting of the image below, taken while watching today’s weird White Sox-Tigers game. I love this image for several reasons: The “dad” is wearing a Cardinals shirt/jersey while proclaiming the greatness of the Tigers...

Miami Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen announced today that he is retiring from the social network because he “hates” it. Ozzie Guillen quits Twitter

One of the more entertaining Twitter accounts in baseball is that of Miami Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen. His broken English and unfiltered opinions made it a real joy to see the Lonely Island Venezualan family image pop up on my feed along with words spelled completely wrong and, assuming I could make out what he was trying to say, something worthwhile of retweeting. Unfortunately...

Ozzie Guillen to Stop Tweeting But Not Spouting Off Ignorantly

Ozzie Guillen has deleted his Twitter account and will no longer tweet, which should come as a relief to the Miami Marlins organization, as their manager has a bad habit of pressing send without thinking. Unfortunately for the Marlins, Guillen can still continue to spout off and demonstrate his abundance of ignorance without using his keyboard. All he has to do is open...

White Sox-Cubs Preview

There will be plenty of excitement in Chicago this weekend, and some of it will pertain to the series between the Cubs and White Sox. With the NATO Summit converging just south of downtown, baseball fans will turn their attention to the North Side as the crosstown series kicks off Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Although both Chicago teams are off to sluggish starts, the rivalry...

Boring and Tame, Just Not the Same

Change and I don’t get along too well. I remember when the Cardinals introduced the Sunday home game alternate cap — the navy blue one with the red bill and the profiled bird. I couldn’t sleep for weeks. WHY?!?! WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS!?!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE REGULAR CAP!?!?! Things are better now; but living in Chicago, I became quite used to the kind of daily drama inherent...

Ozzie Guillen, Fidel Castro and Why No One Cares

[On Hugo Chavez] What I say about Chavez, I don’t say I like his ideas, I don’t say I like the way he is. I just said I like the man because he works hard and he says what he thinks. Some people don’t like it, but I don’t say I like the man, he’s a governor. I don’t say I like the man, he do great things in the world, in my country. I said I like the man because he loves...

Series Preview: Chicago White Sox (18-21) at Chicago Cubs (15-23)

Last I checked, the White Sox were doing pretty well in the AL central and there was talk of contention. They have a losing record now, but it's only a half game back from the heavily favorited Tigers and the surprising Indigenous Peoples. Much like the Cubs they have a solid rotation with a [...]
