Usually the Chicago White Sox will compete for a playoff spot with the rest of the American League Central until the last month or so of the season.  Unfortunately for White Sox fans, the club was out of contention much earlier than usual.  With the White Sox being in an unusual position they now play the role of spoiler. The way the remaining schedule shakes out for the little under a month and a half remaining of the season, the White Sox could find themselves in the enviable position of playing meaningful baseball games…albeit not for themselves. The White Sox still have six more games against the Detroit Tigers as they attempt to fend off the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals.  Speaking of those teams, the Sox have seven more games against the pesky Royals as well as six against the Cleveland Indians. Even if the prospect of ruining other team’s hopes for a playoff berth don’t wet your appetite enough, the White Sox may be bringing up some of the future faces of the organization.  In fact, in many ways, the club has already started this movement with their trades of older players.  The Jake Peavy trade gave the White Sox the ability to move Brazillian starting pitcher Andre Rienzo into the pitching rotation.  Catcher Josh Phegley’s Major League cup of coffee continues.  Although Phegley has been struggling, the Sox organization is sure to take a good look at the catcher to see if he is a bona fide Major League player that the club can use. For the White Sox it all comes down to ruining seasons.  If they can grab some wins from their division rivals and develop some young players along the way, the future should look bright for the South Side of Chicago.  However, if you still can’t stand to watch White Sox baseball, there’s always football season.
  • I could never stand to watch White Sox baseball with Ken Harrelson doing the play-by-play. The worst to ever sit behind a microphone.
