Someone has been doing some good work to keep Chief Wahoo’s Wikipedia page up to date, with significant edits having been made last week. The page does an especially good job of tracking public statements on the Jim Crow/Third Reich relic made by the Cleveland Indians organization as well as critics of the symbol and other notables. There’s also reference to some polling results and other research that I hadn’t seen before, including a report from Terry Pluto that “the overwhelming majority” of Native Americans he met on a tour of reservations in the late 90′s object to the logo. But my favorite addition is probably this: Chief Wahoo has been criticized by former Cleveland Indian Larry Doby, the first black player in the American League. Explaining his desire to see the team do away with the logo, he said, “It reminds me of blackface minstrel shows.” In 2007, Indians VP of public relations Bob DiBiasio told the Boston Globe that Doby is one of the players he believes people think of when they see Chief Wahoo. Last April, Indians President Mark Shapiro explained that “Chief Wahoo isn’t going anywhere,” because “we choose to do is celebrate, you know, Louis Sockalexis and and his history and tradition with the Indians and, and not to focus on uh anything that we would view, that, you know, anything that we don’t view and certainly don’t want to put, uh, be offensive to anyone.” It’s been forty-three NBA seasons, forty-eight Major League Baseball seasons, and forty-five NFL seasons since 1964, the year the Civil Rights Act became law and the year that a Cleveland team last won a championship in one of these leagues. The Indians have lost 7 in a row and 15 of their last 19 after last weekend’s sweep by the Tigers, and sit 5.5 games back in the AL Central. We’ll be back to catch up on some other things later this week. Hope everyone’s gets off to a decent start.     Tweet
