PLAYERS: Chipper Jones
TEAMS: Atlanta Braves
Chipper Jones has a lot of time on his hands now that he’s retired from baseball, so he keeps busy with hunting and fishing and outdoorsy stuff. Chipper also helps out around the house with chores and whatnot, but after what happened when Jones cleaned out the fireplace earlier today, he might not be asked to help out around the house again. Lol. Tried to do my daily chores and cleaned out the fireplace. Went and dumped the ashes. Alls good right? Nope. Set the woods on fire! Ugh — Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) January 23, 2014 I got firefighters all over my place! Thank you Roswell Fire Dept. — Chipper Jones (@RealCJ10) January 23, 2014 How bad could the fire have been? If these pictures from Chipper’s lady friend Taylor Higgins are any indication, pretty damn bad… @RealCJ10 cleaned the fireplace out today.meet the neighbors too..they came 2 say they called the fire dept #thanks pic.twitter.com/WjBliZHU80 — Taylor Higgins (@lilgeorgiapeach) January 23, 2014 Chipper’s lucky he didn’t...

Earlier this evening, former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones managed to alert the local fire departments by igniting a forest fire. Apparently he isn’t much of a Smokey the Bear fan. Three burning questions for Braves' shortstop position

At a premium position, one other franchises around the league are clamoring for, the Atlanta Braves are set for the foreseeable future. Andrelton Simmons, the defensive whiz and one of the most valuable shortstops in the game, is under team control until 2019. He's 24 years old, and that's what is considered a steal. In the span of two offseasons, Simmons has gone from the...

Reviewing the notable quirks in the Braves' 2014 schedule

The Braves launch full-squad workouts for spring training four weeks from today (Feb. 18 at the Walt Disney World complex in Kissimmee, Fla.). As an appetizer to that, here's a look at 11 notable quirks from the team's 2014 schedule, which in hindsight, has less volatility than last year's slate of time-zone-extending road trips and back-loaded homestands: 1. The Braves...

Will the Braves be forced to trade their closer?

Until relatively recently, it seemed as if the financial strata of baseball teams was frozen. Big-market teams would remain big, small-market teams small, and the financial health of some might never improve. Now the disparity between the haves and have-nots isn't as clearly defined as it once was. Some of the organizations that were once paupers are now kings and vice-versa...

Lucas Sims stepping into No. 1 prospect spotlight

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Tucked into the overlapping suburban sprawl that is Gwinnett County, just 40 minutes northwest of Atlanta's Turner Field, Lucas Sims grew up a short car ride from his best-case scenario. And for as long as he can remember, that scenario centered around playing baseball for the team on his parents' TV, watching and watching until he couldn't watch...

B.J. Upton too focused on '14 season to lament past struggles

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The backdrop at Redan High School resembled the look of a presidential candidate standing in front of a car-manufacturing plant, while delivering an upbeat speech about jobs. Here was B.J. Upton, a former prep phenom at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Va. and No. 2 overall pick from the 2002 MLB Draft (Rays), standing adjacent to the Redan High...

Oakland A’s Roll The Dice On Eric O’Flaherty

Left-handed reliever Eric O’Flaherty agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with the A’s on Wednesday. Today a couple of vastly different pitchers signed with American League playoff contenders that are polar opposites and even though I should be caught up in the headline-grabbing move, it’s the under-the-radar acquisition that piques my interest the most. Obviously...

Greg Maddux' Hall of Fame Plaque Will Have No Logo

Greg Maddux, who had good-to-great years with the Cubs and fantastic years with the Atlanta Braves, will not have either team's logo on his Hall of Fame plaque. Not just because I'm a fan of Maddux, and a Cubs fan, but because I think this could set a good precedent going forward, I'm very pleased with Maddux' decision. Hall of Fame induction is supposed to celebrate...

In a move that will surprise some, Greg Maddux has opted to go into Baseball’s Hall of Fame without a team’s logo on his plaque. Maddux is thrilled that his plaque will not feature a logo of the Atlanta Braves or Chicago Cubs. “My wife Kathy and I grew up in baseball in Chicago, and then we had just an amazing experience in Atlanta with the Braves.
