According to Jon Morosi, the Seattle Mariners are looking to trade Chone Figgins and are willing to include cash. This, of course, comes as no surprise. The Giants, apparently, are a target of interest for the Mariners, as a team that’s “in need of a leadoff guy”: Mariners officials are hopeful that teams in need of a leadoff man will engage them in trade talks over the next few weeks. Sources say Seattle officials view Cincinnati, Detroit, and San Francisco as possible fits for Figgins. Figgins, 33, is signed through 2013 on a four-year $36MM deal, and he has a vesting option worth $9MM for 2014 (it vests if he gets 600+ PAs in 2013). He’s a career .280/.352/.368 hitter but in the past couple years, those numbers have dropped significantly. He posted a .302 wOBA (88 wRC+) in 2010, and hit just .188/.241/.243 (.218 wOBA, 34 wRC+) last year. He’s somewhat of a utility player, having played around the diamond throughout his career, but he’s mostly s...

Alex Liddi needs rest after being dumped by winter ball teams in Venezuela and now the Domincan Republic

Alex Liddi was originally supposed to be heading home to Italy after being dropped last week by his winter ball team in Venezuela. But he headed to the Dominican Republic instead and caught on with the Leones del Escogido. We found out that news this afternoon and tweeted it. Less than an hour later, we found out that Liddi was released today after just three games in which he committed...

Mariners Hope For A Prince?

The Seattle Mariners are considering on whether or not to make a big splash in free agency. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that the Mariners have expressed interest in Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. It surprises me a bit considering the team finished fourth in the American League West and have a lot of holes but he could help rejuvenate the fan base....

AL West Notes: Hernandez, Mariners, Angels, Barajas

Here's a look at a few items out of the American League West.. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has no intentions to trade Felix Hernandez and the organization plans to build around the 25-year-old right-hander, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Angels called to express interest in Rod Barajas after he had already committed to the Pirates, tweets Bill Shaikin of...

Michael Pineda fifth, Dustin Ackley sixth in AL Rookie of the Year voting

Michael Pineda lost his chance at American League Rookie of the Year when he put up a very average looking string of outings after the All Star Break, coinciding with the decision by the Mariners to back him off a bit. That said, I find it difficult to reconcile him dropping all the way to fifth. That said, I have no qualms about Tampa Bay starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson taking...

Movember MLB Mustache Madness: Current Players Semi-Finals - Bautista vs. Ryan

In our next Movember MLB Mustache Madness Current Player Semi-Final, we get an epic slugger versus an epic slappy, but we also get two epic mustaches. What more could you ask for? Jose Bautista Joey Bats has the power and the power mustache, but is his short-liven flirtation with an upper lip umbrella enough to overtake the long-cultivated crumb catcher of his counterpart? VS....

Could Mariners fit free-agent slugger Prince Fielder into their budget?

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said the team will try to improve its offense this offseason. "We'd love to be able to secure some kind of bat if possible," he said. The Mariners are one of several teams who might make a run at free agent Prince Fielder.

ROY Award

In about 10 minutes, the BBWAA is going to announce the winners of the AL and NL Rookie of the Year awards. Odds are pretty good the AL trophy will end up going to Ivan Nova, Jeremy Hellickson, or Mark Trumbo, while Dustin Ackley and Michael Pineda will get a token vote here or there. Personally, I just don’t care. The results of the voting don’t matter to me at all...
