ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Chris Archer pitched six strong innings, while Matt Joyce and Kelly Johnson drove in two runs apiece to help the surging Tampa Bay Rays extend their winning streak to a season-best six games with a 4-1 victory over the sputtering Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
Archer (3-3) limited the Twins to an unearned run and three hits to outpitch fellow rookie Kyle Gibson (1-2), who was done in by one bad inning in his third career start for Minnesota.
The Twins have lost nine of 10 games. The Rays matched their longest winning streak of the year and are 8-1 during a stretch of 14 consecutive games against the struggling Twins, Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros leading to the All-Star break.
Joyce drove in two runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single that snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth. Johnson followed with a two-run double to give Archer all the support he would need.
The Rays' starter yielded Joe Mauer's first-inning double and singles b...
BEST OF MAXIM
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. It would be convenient to credit the rattail. Luke Scotts quirky hair design, which looks like something gifted from the 1980s, does not hold mythical powers or mysterious sources of strength.
But there is something odd, interesting cool about Scotts style choice, which made its debut at the start of the current 10-game homestand last Friday. His recent numbers...
Minnesota outfielder Aaron Hicks has looked like a different player since returning from the disabled list earlier this month, and he had perhaps the best offensive game of his young career in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hicks finished Monday's game with a four-hit night -- the first of his career -- which included two doubles and a triple. In seven games since...
With the MLB Final Vote in full swing and the All-Star game looming, I thought it would be a good time to address the obvious American League All-Star team snubs and omissions. Manager Jim Leyland opted to add five relievers to his squad and a 6th will be added at the conclusion of the fans Final Vote. The Tigers big man selected Brett Cecil, Glen Perkins, Mariano Rivera, Jesse...
Oswaldo Arcia digs into the batter's box without much fear.
The Twins' free-swinging outfielder has seen major league pitchers adjust to him since his debut on April 15, but he's made the appropriate adjustments in return. The left-handed Arcia isn't afraid to face some of the league's top left-handed pitching. Such was the case last week when Arcia lined a base...
Caleb Thielbar's impressive streak of scoreless innings may be over, but the Twins rookie has still been a bright spot for Minnesota during the first half of the year.
Before Monday's game against Tampa Bay, Thielbar had yet to allow a run in his first 19 23 innings of his major league career. Since making his debut on May 20, Thielbar made Twins history with his scoreless...

The Tampa Bay Rays’ aquarium-style “touch tank” in center field is one of the few unique aspects of much-maligned Tropicana Field. But since Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera crushed a home run into the open tank two weeks ago, the exhibit — which contains live cownose rays — has come under scrutiny.
A representative of PETA sent a strongly worded letter to Rays senior vice president...
Unfortunately, any Minnesota Twins fans in the St. Petersburg area on Tuesday who took in their favorite team facing the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field were dealt with suffering through another agonizing, borderline unwatchable (other than Oswaldo Arcia’s colossal derp when trying to field a foul popup) loss. So, said fans had to do [...]The post Twins fan feeds girlfriend sunflower...
The Minnesota Twins' offense and pitching both continue to prove unreliable during the team's rough stretch. Those troubles could continue Wednesday night as they face a hot pitcher while their own hurler tries to turn things around.
Minnesota tries to avoid losing its sixth straight road series when it faces Jeremy Hellickson and the Tampa Bay Rays, who seek a season-high...
Ben Zobrist hit an RBI single with two outs in the 13th inning and the Tampa Bay Rays won their season-best seventh straight game, beating the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Zobrist lined a 1-2 pitch from Ryan Pressly (2-1) into the gap in right-center field, ending a 4-hour, 47-minute game that featured 35 strikeouts -- 19 for Rays pitchers.
Tampa Bay climbed to a season...
If Kyle Gibson's major league debut was memorable and his second outing was forgettable, Gibson's third career start was somewhere in between.
The Twins right-hander allowed four runs Tuesday against Tampa Bay, all in the fourth inning, as he and Minnesota fell, 4-1, to the Rays at Tropicana Field. As a result, Gibson fell to 1-2 with a 7.27 ERA in his young career.
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon feels his team reached an important regular-season milestone.
Yunel Escobar and Ben Zobrist homered during a three-run seventh inning and the surging Rays improved to a season-high 10 games over .500 by beating the Minnesota Twins 7-4 on Monday night.
"The thing I like is that we're 10 games over," Maddon said. "You've got to...
Yunel Escobar and Ben Zobrist homered during a three-run seventh inning and the surging Tampa Bay Rays beat the Minnesota Twins 7-4 on Monday night.
Escobar had a leadoff tiebreaking homer in the seventh off Samuel Deduno (4-4), who departed after Desmond Jennings followed with a triple. Caleb Thielbar entered and got one out before Zobrist gave Tampa Bay a 6-3 lead with a two-run...
Minnesota's Aaron Hicks races to deep center, leaps, and slams into the wall to make an incredible catch against the Rays in the 10th last night.

Good morning. Couldn’t sleep, so here are some links.
Oswaldo Arcia had a tough time with a fly ball.
In the event you didn’t know, pretty much all of the All Stars are former Twins.
I don’t know why I didn’t wrap my head around this, but Roger Maris still holds the AL single season home run record.
Chicago 11, Detroit 4 – It’s only July, but Chicago is...
