PLAYERS: Chris Sale
TEAMS: Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox are bad, really bad. They are 41-69, last place bad. They are second worst record in all of baseball bad, but don’t you dare blame Chris Sale for the woes on the South Side of Chicago. Chris Sale (Photo Credit: AP) The 24-year-old lefty was the game winning pitcher for the American League in the All Star Game this year, his second consecutive year of being selected. In 2012, he finished 6th in the voting for the AL Cy Young and 2013 will be really interesting where he finishes. At 6-11, he has an argument to claim the prize. He hurled 192 innings in 2012 and only needs 50 more to eclipse that in 2013. At first glance 6-11 is not that impressive, but Sale has a 147 ERA+ and 1.049 WHIP. He has a 5.0 WAR. That’s good enough for 5th in the American League among all pitchers, and at 5.6, only Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners has a higher WAR for pitchers. For a few years, King Felix had been the poster child for tough luck pitchers. At 52-60, the M’s aren’t great this year, but they are in 3rd place in the AL West as of Aug. 6. He won the Cy Young in 2010 amid to much controversy. He had a sparkling league leading 249.2 innings pitched, a 7.1 WAR to lead all AL pitchers, had a 174 ERA+ and 1.057 WHIP. Here’s the thing: He was 13-12 on the year and for traditionalists, to give him the Cy Young was unacceptable. This year he has a league leading 160.2 WHIP, 157 ERA+ and 1.058 WHIP, but an 11-4 record. It is looking like he just may claim his second Cy Young here in 2013, but at this point, it would have to look like he or Sale. If Felix wins, where does Sale finish? Baseball fans ought to be extremely curious as to where he places. There are guys like Brian Kenny from MLB Network who are very vocal against the use of wins and losses for pitchers. Let’s face it, if one had to guess his record, they would not typically think Sale was 6-11 based on the other numbers.  It looks like as of right now Felix has the better numbers, but one cannot possibly discount Sale from being involved in the race. If Sale ends up winning the award with a losing record, it could be 2010 on steroids. A Chris Sale Cy Young would indicate the Baseball Writers’ Association of America is looking past traditional stats into more advanced pitching numbers, but certainly they can expect an uproar as well if that were to happen.

Lost Games, Hit-By-Pitches & Twitter Fights

After two straight losses to the last place Chicago White Sox, it's hard to ignore the fact that the season is now getting away from the Yankees.  If only this fact was as innocuous as the pitch that got away from Chris Sale last night, hitting Alex Rodriguez.  However, it is not, and the Yankees are seemingly headed to their first absence from the postseason since 2008.Speaking...

Biogenesis suspensions could benefit White Sox

The Biogenesis report and subsequent investigation by Major League Baseball led to 13 players being suspended on August 5.
