Homer Bailey came through for the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark, as he dominated all night, throwing his second career no-hitter in the process. It was the 16th no-no in Reds history. Bailey was one walk away from pitching a perfect game as he gave San Francisco Giants’ center fielder Gregor Blanco a free pass to lead off the seventh inning. Blanco grounded out to third base in the ninth inning to end the game and complete Bailey’s gem. Bailey didn’t do it without help, however. After Blanco reached first with a walk in the seventh, he advanced to second base on a ground-out from Marco Scutaro. The next batter was catcher Buster Posey, who hit a high-bouncing grounder to Reds’ first baseman Joey Votto. Bailey was  slow to cover first base on the play, and Votto made a great play when he saw Blanco advancing to third. He threw the ball to third baseman Todd Frazier, who tagged Blanco out, turning the play from a would-be infield hit into a fielder’s choice. Bailey helped himself out in the top of the ninth on another high-bouncing groundout from Brandon Crawford. Bailey leaped high off the mound to make the grab on a nice play before throwing to Votto for the first out in the final inning. The last time Major League Baseball saw a no-hitter was on September 28, 2012. The man on the mound that day? Homer Bailey. He is the third active pitcher to throw two no-hitters in his career, and has plenty left in the tank to potentially throw another. Giants starter Tim Lincecum was on the losing end in this one, going 5.1 innings and using 102 pitches. Lincecum allowed three earned runs and struck out eight batters. Bailey struck out nine and lowered his season earned run average to 3.57.
