Joey Votto It’s no doubt when thinking of the top players on the Cincinnati Reds squad, names such as Joey Votto or Brandon Phillips begin to spark in every mind. People look for these key players, on every team, to step up a notch, choke up on the bat (literally) and hit in a couple runs. But fans in ballparks away from the  Great American Ballpark are seeing a different Votto than those Cincinnati faithful who creep outside their homes on a Thursday night game. Let me give you that statistics, then we’ll break them down. This year (before Sunday night’s blunder of extra innings and catastrophe) Votto had played in 31 home games. His numbers (read in Avg., OBP., and Slug.): .268/.382/.409.  And in his 30 road games, his numbers were: .391/.514/.627. Yes, you read that correctly. Votto is most definitely the Reds’ road warrior. And if that throws you for a loop, check out these numbers. Of his 10 home runs this season, six of those have been hit in away stadiums, and all six were in the month of May. So why is this? Is it because the Reds have played 17 more home games than away games this year, giving Votto more chances to strikeout or fly out? Hardly. It’s merely the fact that someone needs to step up in these tough road games. In three series this season, the Reds have faced six games against the Cardinals and three games against the Pirates, all on the road. In those three series, he was .270/.509/.409. So, if you’re a hopeful Reds fan hanging out in the suburbs of Chicago, I’d say I like your chances of seeing Votto do well in the historic Wrigley Field, and maybe even catch home run no. 11 from him during this four game set against the Cubs.
