The season is coming to an end. We only have a month and a half remaining until the playoffs begin and we will crown a new champion. Another highlight of this period is the customary handing out of awards. Soon names will be added to lists that include Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays. One of the most prestigious of these awards is the Cy Young. Named for the (year) hall of famer, it is awarded to the season best overall pitcher. The Cincinnati Reds are making a lot of noise in this year’s NL Cy Young race. Closer Aroldis Chapman’s name is being tossed around as the first relief pitcher since Eric Gagne to win the award. While all of the acclaim is warranted, it takes away from the best pitcher in Cincinnati. Johnny Cueto has flown under the radar all season. But after today’s 3 hit 8 inning gem it is time we give credit where credit is due. It has been an unfathomable stretch for the Reds pitcher. Even before today he has been lighting it up, with a 2.44 ERA and 135 strikeouts. Today’s win also made him the first NL pitcher to get to 16 wins on the year. While RA Dickey’s season has been incredible he doesn’t deserve the award over Cueto. Dickey’s story is powerful, and it is always fun to see a knuckleballer succeed, but the numbers don’t lie. With better numbers in terms of wins and ERA Cueto has proven he deserves it. What is potentially more impressive about Cueto is how he has dealt with the heavy expectations placed on his shoulders. Coming into the year the Reds pitching staff looked atrocious. The only starter who was supposed to be good was Johnny Cueto. Instead of wilting under the pressure, he has stepped up. The position the Reds find themselves in is in large part due to Cueto. Every time he takes the mound Cincinnati has a chance to win. All of these things added up should be a Cy Young for Johnny Cueto. I think that by the end of the season the writers will start to see that and he will take the award. If not I am sure whoever wins deserves it entirely. But if it were up to me, I’d pick Cincinnati’s ace.

Latos, Cueto give the Reds the ol' 1-2 punch

CINCINNATI -- While Johnny Cueto (16-6) is the Cincinnati Reds' pitcher most cussed and discussed by frustrated opposing hitters, Mat Latos hasn't been laying in the weeds pulling legs off crickets. The 24-year-old righthander is covered with body art and he says, "I only have one tattoo. It just isn't finished yet." They should tattoo a big red 'W'...

By doing so, they were able to stretch their division lead to 6.5 games -- the largest for any first place team in baseball. Here are some notable quotes from the series: Friday (Win, 7-3) + “In the years before, we’ve always had...

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Xavier Paul led off the ninth inning with a pinch-hit triple and Ryan Hanigan followed with a single Sunday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs. Central-leading Reds come to Philly for four-game series

Off a 3-for-4 game in the series finale against the Brewers, Domonic Brown and the Phillies face the Cincinnati Reds in a four-game series. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) As the season winds down, it's easier to separate the men from the boys and contenders from pretenders. The Reds fit both of the former descriptions. Cincinnati has been a revived team after missing the playoffs...

Homer Happy Phils Crush Cincinnati, 12-5

Doc didn't have his best stuff tonight, but the stuff he had was still dominant. The Reds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Jay Bruce doubled to bring home Zack Cozart, the first run, then Brandon Phillips scored on a groundout from former Phillie Scott Rolen. The Phils got on the board in the home half of the first courtesy of Ryan Howard's RBI single which...

Your Saturday Baseball Open Thread

It’s Saturday, and the Reds play a non-traditional doubleheader. Is there anything better? A full 18 innings of baseball lie ahead, and hopefully two wins at the end of the day are gained in the standings. The Reds are firing on all cylinders coming off a 7-3 victory last night in which Ryan Ludwick hit his 23rd home run, Todd Frazier hit his 16th, and Jay Bruce hit his 25th of...

Nicknames for our Reds

I have a group of guys that I watch the Cincinnati Reds with. When we’re not watching them together, an endless string of texts seem to go back and forth between these guys and me. We have more inside jokes about the Reds roster than I can even begin to explain. We’ve also nicknamed a lot of the roster with affectionately stupid monikers. This is a group you’ll want to remember...

Reds-Phillies Preview

Mike Leake wasn't too sharp the last time the Cincinnati Reds faced the Philadelphia Phillies, and the result was a historic defeat. But if Leake has the same stuff as he did in his last start, the result could be a lot different this time. The NL Central-leading Reds will try to end a six-game losing streak to the Phillies on Monday night in Philadelphia as these teams square...

Leake, Reds stumble to open series in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer and Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz had solo shots to back Roy Halladay, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 on Monday night. Halladay (7-7) wasn't sharp, allowing five runs and 10 hits in seven innings. But the offense bailed out the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Domonic Brown hit a go-ahead...
