The Red Sox have held up just fine without Clay Buchholz. But getting the ace back still remains a top priority.
Fortunately for the Red Sox, Buchholz took another step toward a return. The right-hander threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday without experiencing any discomfort. Buchholz will throw again Friday, and if all goes well, he will make a minor league rehab start Sunday.
“He had another strong day today,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game. “Long toss, he was aggressive. He got on the mound for a 25-pitch pen. The ball got out of his hand very well. Tomorrow would be a light day for him with just some light catch to get his arm moving. We’d look to repeat today on Friday and possibly a more intense bullpen session.”
Buchholz threw mostly fastballs during Wednesday’s bullpen session, and the Red Sox still haven’t placed an exact timetable on his return. He is expected to need two minor league rehab starts, so realistically, he could return within a...
BEST OF MAXIM
After being arrested for DUI earlier this spring, Drake Britton’s season has finally turned around for the best with his pitching in minor league and to three months later, being in the mix to start the for Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in Oakland. Britton, who came into the 2013 season without to prove after nearly spending five seasons in the minor has put together a solid...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Doubront had one of his best starts of the season as he only allowed five hits and two walks while holding the Mariners to only one run through seven innings. The lefty mixed up his pitches well, and used four...
The Boston Red Sox have recalled right-handed reliever Pedro Beato and knuckle ball right-handed reliever Steven Wright from their Triple-A Pawtucket farm club.
To make room on the roster, the Red Sox have optioned right-handed starters Alfredo Aceves and Allen Webster to the same minor league affiliate.
Look for Beato and Wright to work the middle innings with Wright having an outside...
The Boston Red Sox added needed depth to its bullpen calling up right-handers Steven Wright and Pedro Beato.
The Red Sox made the moves Wednesday before facing the Seattle Mariners. Boston optioned starter Allen Webster and reliever Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A Pawtucket to clear roster spots.
The decision to send out Webster leaves the Red Sox needing a starter for Sunday's...
The Red Sox just weathered another stretch where young replacements struggled on the big league stage, with Alex Wilson getting decimated in relief and Allen Webster slipping in his latest spot start.
But no matter — Boston has the best record in the American League (and almost the majors) heading into Friday’s game.
Something strange is happening with the team that calls Fenway...
The Red Sox won the series finale in Seattle today, 8-7, as Daniel Nava hit a two-out single to drive in Jackie Bradley, Jr. in the 10th inning.
Nava was an unlikely hero (and not just because the usual "he was signed for $1" reason). Heading into the at bat, Nava was 0-for-5, and to top it off, with first base open and Bradley on second, Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen...
Last night Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz passed Harold Baines for the number one spot in all-time hits for a designated hitter. Ortiz hit his 1,689th hit against the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The American League instituted the DH spot in 1973 and now Ortiz is at the top of the mountain for designated hitters.
The milestone happened in the second inning when Big Papi hit a...

Unless you've been living under a rock, then you'll know that David Ortiz just set a new record for most hits by a designated hitter Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners. So, with that new record begs the question: Does Big Papi have a shot at the Hall of Fame? You could make a compelling argument...
David Ortiz doubled in his first at-bat to become baseball's all-time leader in hits as a designated hitter and hit a two-run homer an inning later, leading the Boston Red Sox to an 11-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.
Ortiz entered the night tied with Harold Baines for the most hits as a DH and it took just one at-bat to claim the record. Ortiz doubled to...
The Red Sox scratched, clawed and knuckled their way to a 10-inning win over the Mariners on Thursday.
The Mariners jumped on Ryan Dempster early and often. They built a 5-1 lead through three innings and held a 7-4 lead after four innings. The Red Sox kept battling, though, and the end result was a textbook team victory.
The Red Sox have shown a flair for the dramatic this season...
Lost somehow amid Puig-mania is the superb first half Boston’s Jose Iglesias is having. Take that and shove it, East coast bias truthers! In 166 plate appearances this season Iglesias has put up a .387/.442/.497 line with the OBP boosted by five hit-by-pitches. His OBP against lefties and righties is above .400, as well as in each completed month of the season so far. Now owned...
So much for Seattle's Safeco Field being a "pitchers park". The Red Sox and Mariners combined for 28 hits, 19 runs and six home runs as the Red Sox pulled out the 11-8 win.
David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino and Jackie Bradley Jr all went deep for the Red Sox.
Check out JBJ's home run that proved to be...

If you have been staying up the past several games watch the Red Sox play on the West Coast, then kudos to you. Not only have the nights been long, but the games haven’t been great, especially if you’re a Sox fan watching your team get off to a 2-3 start to midway through this 10-game trip.
Last night was much better, as the Boston Red Sox...
When the Red Sox traded away Manny Ramirez, they received Jason Bay.
Bay reported to Boston from the Pittsburgh Pirates immediately and was in the Sox lineup the next day. He had a remarkable first few games with the ball club and, though he was only with Boston for two seasons, Bay has fond memories with the team.
Bay talked about them with NESN’s Jamie Erdahl before the Sox matched...
