Clayton Mortensen to the Disabled List; Boston Red Sox call up Jose De La Torre   The Red Sox have placed right-hander Clayton Mortensen on the 15-day disabled list due to a right hip impingement. He has pitched in four organizations over four years which were the St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies and presently the Boston Red Sox. So far this season Clay has a record of 1-2 and a 5.33 earned run average with 6.2 K/9. Clay has also pitched in 24 games totaling 30 innings mostly in a set up role or the 7th inning role.  In a corresponding move the Red Sox called up rookie left hander Jose De La Torre from Triple A Pawtucket to take Clay's spot on the 25 man roster. Jose has been apart of three organizations of his career which are the New York Mets, Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. He was acquired in the Brent Lillibridge deal where Boston sent Lillibridge to the Indians in exchange for De La Torre. De La Torre will be used out of the bullpen and wil...

Jacoby Ellsbury’s Hot Streak Creating Wave That Red Sox Must Ride, As Unpredictability Will Always Loom

Jacoby Ellsbury’s season has essentially been a microcosm of his career. He’s been up. He’s been down. He’s been injured. He’s been criticized. He’s been defended. And he’s been arguably the most difficult player on the Red Sox to gauge. Sounds familiar, right? This season is a big one for Ellsbury because of his impending free agency. The hope was that Ellsbury could...

Middlebrooks returns to lineup

@nickcafardo - Boston GlobeThere it is, folks. Middlebrooks in, Iglesias out. This doesn't necessarily mean Jose will be sent back down to Pawtucket, he will likely stick around to platoon. Ciriaco will likely be the odd man out. In his 5 game with Pawtucket, Will Middlebrooks went 5-for-17, with 2 homers, and 6 RBI. The Sox made it very clear that Middlebrooks would be inserted...

Red Sox Blow 6-Run Lead; Win Anyway, 10-8

(Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)The Red Sox plated six runs in the first inning before the Rays' Alex Cobb recorded an out. Then, John Lackey opened the floodgates to an eventual 6-6 tie that ended just before 1AM, with a 10-8 Boston victory. Daniel Nava drove in the winning run in the 14th, but it was Jarrod Saltalamacchia who was the offensive hero again—going 4 for 7 with...

Recap: Lester roughed up at the Trop, Sox lose

Anything you have to say about tonight's 8-3 loss against the Rays begins and ends with Jon Lester. Sure, there were near-fireworks when Rays starter Rofaustoberto Hernancarmonadez, still pitching in the 8th inning with a five-run lead and a high pitch count, drilled Dustin Pedroia. All sides behaved themselves, but it was so obvious that Joe Maddon had ordered retailiation...

Red Sox, Rays Should Think Twice Before Escalating Animosity in Wake of Monday’s Beaning (Video)

If the Rays want revenge for John Lackey‘s beaning of Matt Joyce on Monday, they’re not likely to get it early on Tuesday night. After all, neither team can afford to lose a starting pitcher in this game, after they both burned up their bullpens in an extra-inning affair the last time out. NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette isn’t ruling out any unruly behavior from the two teams...

2013 All-Star Game: Making the case for Nava

The Guru Contributing Writer There are nine Boston Red Sox players listed on the 2013 All-Star ballot, one for every position, including designated hitter. With the game a month away, David Ortiz appears a lock to make the team. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury have a good chance to make it as well. A Red Sox player deserving a spot is not even on the ballot; Daniel Nava. Looking...

Four Bases: Red Sox 2, Rays 1 – Nava Goes Deep to Seal Series Win

A relatively refreshing rubber match. After 18 combined runs in the first game, 11 combined runs in the second game, the Red Sox out-pitched the Rays in to take the 2-1 win, winning their eighth game against the team from the gulf. Here are the four bases: First Base: Escaping by the skin of their fingers. The rotation in this series should have gone 0-3, considering they combined...

Nava lifts Red Sox in 14th inning

Daniel Nava hit a tiebreaking single in the 14th inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-8 on Monday night after squandering two late leads in a testy game that included a bench-clearing scrum.

The Iggy effect

Sean Riley Contributing Writer Jose Iglesias has earned what seems to be a very steady role on the Red Sox 25 man roster. With the return of Will Middlebrooks from injury many expected Iglesias to stay in the bigs with his hot bat and Pedro Ciriaco become the odd man out. This will not be the typical utility infielder most are used to seeing on a big league team. Manager John Farrell...

Pedroia or Cano?

In Major League Baseball there have always been great debates about star players from different teams.  Some that immediately come to mind from the past are Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams? Carlton Fisk or Thurman Munson? Hank Aaron or Willie Mays? Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens? In this modern era we are in the players are bigger and stronger.  There’s better nutrition, year...
