Happy Draft Day Baseball Nerds! Tonight begins the 2013 MLB Draft, and the Cleveland Indians are in desperate need to enhance their “Bullpen Mafia” as well as other areas across the diamond. But with just two picks in the first three rounds, the pressure is on to make the most of what they have to enhance their farm system as well as the Indians in the future. The good news is the Tribe has the fifth overall pick – the bad news is that it is just out of reach of the top collegiate arms like Johnathan Gray, Mark Appel, and Kohl Stewart.
The fifth pick is projected to be Colin Moran, a 3B from UNC. While the 3B position is weak in the farm systems, Moran could be a great add as he is deemed to be the best 3B in the draft. At 6″3/215, the 20 year old a well polished power hitter for the Tar Heels that has accumulated 13 HR, 85 RBI and 69 runs scored over 63 games played… translate that to a 162-game season that translates to and that would be 33 HR, 218 RBI and 177 runs scored.
The next pick that the Tribe has is in round 3 (pick 79). That pick is projected to be AJ Puk (LHP). Puk may not be on the Top 100, but he is ranked number 19 in Top 100 Left Handed Pitchers. Puk’s pitches sit in the low 90-92 mph range and his throwing motion is effortless. Given Puk’s size (6’7/225) the speed will only increase.
Puk has already committed to The University Of Florida for the 2014 season, but a call from the MLB tonight may swing him from his excitement about college, to making the big bucks in the big leagues.
