The Phillies were unable to pull off a sweep against the Rockies, but they still won two games out of three. I guess it's good enough, but now the real task is at hand. The Phillies are opening up a weekend series with the Tampa Rays this evening. The Rays (38-31) sit 3 1/2 games back in the AL East while the Phillies (33-38) still sit nine games back in their division. Given that the Rays are in one of the toughest divisions in baseball, they are still a great team. They're pitching is top notch and it's going to take great pitching on our part to keep it close. This is the first time these teams have met in Philly since the 2008 World Series.
Tonight Cliff Lee (0-3, 3.48 ERA) will make his twelfth start of the season all while seeking for his first win of the season. Lee has come up short this season a lot of times. Sometimes it's been the lack of run support, but as of late Lee has had a considerable amount of run support and he has blown all of the leads that he...

Manuel Hopeful Utley Can Return Next Week
Will Chase return next week? (AP)
Charlie Manuel said before Thursday’s series finale against the Rockies that Chase Utley could be back next week if all continues to go well.
Manuel says it’s all about feeling comfortable in the field for Utley, who is DH-ing and batting third for Clearwater again tonight. He played eight innings in the field on Wednesday and hit a home run...
PhilliesNation Interview: OF Prospect Kyrell Hudson
Class A Lakewood outfielder Kyrell Hudson hasn’t had the type of season that many had expected after he became an All-Star last season with the short-season Williamsport Crosscutters. Thus far in 2012, the 21-year-old has posted a .202/.262/.271 line over 56 games.
It’s not unusual for Hudson to have a rough time at the plate. The Phillies’ 2009 third round draft pick posted...
On return, Phillies need to ease Utley back
Chase Utley went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and played eigth innings in the field in last night's rehab start with Clearwater. He can return to the Phillies no later than July 2. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso)
There was more than one situation last night when the Phillies could have used Chase Utley's bat at the plate. Utley, who is by far the closest injured Phillie...
Rays face Phillies in doubleheader Sunday
The Tampa Bay Rays have struggled against left-handers all season. Now they have to face two who have haunted them in the past in one day. The Philadelphia Phillies will send Cole Hamels and then Cliff Lee to the mound Sunday at Citizens Bank Park in a day-night doubleheader against the Rays. Tampa Bay (38-32) has lost three straight overall and brings a 9-14 mark against...
Thome Sweet Thome: Jim's walk-off blast saves Papelbon
Jim Thome's 13th career walk-off home run is the most in major-league history. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso)
Antonio Bastardo allowed just one run in a bases-loaded, no-out jam. That kept the Phillies lead intact going to the ninth. That usually means game over for the Phillies. For Jonathan Papelbon, perfection came to an end.
Papelbon couldn't close things out for the...

Rays-Phillies Preview
A discouraging stretch over the last week has dropped the Tampa Bay Rays out of first place in the AL East.
The Philadelphia Phillies, meanwhile, have been scuffling for weeks and Cliff Lee is still winless.
When these two struggling teams meet in Friday night's series opener in Philadelphia, Lee could give the Phillies the upper hand considering the Rays' recent offensive...

Is Blanton Throwing Too Many Strikes?
Blanton is struggling once again (AP)
“If you want to know the truth, you can never throw too many strikes,” said Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel after I asked him if Blanton was hitting the zone a little too frequently. “I think it’s where you put the ball…it comes back to location, location, location.”
So, Manuel wouldn’t completely concede that Blanton was throwing...
Phillies Stomp Rockies by a Toe Length
The Phillies won the second game of their series with the Rockies, not by a nose or even by the hair of their chins; they won by a toe. It was Todd Helton’s toe, to be exact.
In the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, the bases loaded and a tie game, Placido Polanco stepped to the plate. He hit a bouncing grounder to short that looked like it might end the game. It did end the game...
