One game does not a natural make but the Chris Coghlan infield experiment yielded positive results early. Making his first ever major league start at third Coghlan made a key defensive play early in a 6-2 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field late Tuesday. Winners of three straight for the first time since July 31-Aug. 2 the Marlins will go for the three-game sweep in Wednesday’s matinee. Coghlan did his part to put them in position to win the series. With runners at the corners and two out in a scoreless game Anthony Rizzo hit a chopper to the left side. Coghlan dove secured the ball and popped up to get the force at second. It was one of two assists on the night for Coghlan an infielder-turned-outfielder-turned-infielder again. “I felt like I was in college again” said Coghlan who played a lot of third while at Mississippi. “It was fun…It’s a lot of work to get to where it was not only rehab to get your body healthy but taking early work almost every day for almost two months. It’s been a long road. For me I guess it was an accomplishment to get that game.” Added manager Mike Redmond: “We didn’t really know what to expect. It’s only one game but this time of year for us where we’re at record-wise we have a chance to see some guys at different positions and see what we have. To have him be an option at third base that’s big. We’ll keep plugging him in there and see how he does.” Donovan Solano gave the Marlins’ extra cushion with a two-run double part of a three-run eighth and three-hit game for Solano. Solano Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton combined to go 7-for-12 with three runs five RBI and three walks. In each of the first three innings the Marlins logged a two-out hit off Cubs’ starter Edwin Jackson and could not score. They broke through in the fifth when Tom Koehler ignited things with a single. Three of the next four batters reached on hits including Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton with an RBI-double and RBI-single respectively.
