PLAYERS: Phil CokeBrad Penny
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers

All I have to say for those of you were hoping for Phil Coke to rejoin the Detroit Tigers rotation, I say too bad. In my opinion, Coke was at his best in the rotation, he just looked so much more comfortable in that kind of role. It sounds like the key people in the Tigers organization feel the same way, mainly general manager Dave Dombrowski. “I saw that written somewhere, but we’re not going to do that,” Dombrowski said Tuesday afternoon. “He’s our bullpen lefty.” (James Schmehl of MLive.com) The numbers COMPLETELY back up the decision. Here’s his 2011 splits. Starter: 14 appearances with a 4.82 ERA and a 1-7 record. Reliever: 34 appearances with a 3.71 ERA and a 2-2 record. I know, earned run average isn’t the end all be all when it comes to judging a pitcher. Here’s where I think Coke is better in the bullpen and it doesn’t involve him being a lefty. His control is insanely better in the relief role. Starter: 1.47 WHIP, 4.5 SO/9 an...

2011 Tigers Review – Austin Jackson

What’s his Grade – I give Austin Jackson a “C.”  This is probably higher then most people might have thought but buried in Jackson’s low batting average were some optimistic signs.  Yes, he only hit .249 (I wonder who could have predicted that) but he turned some of those doubles into home runs a little [...]

Austin Jackson Gets Award for Fielding

Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson did not win a Gold Glove Award this year, but he won a more relevant award.  He was voted the top center fielder on the Fielding Bible All Defensive Team for 2011.  The Fielding Bible awards are selected by a diverse group including statisticians, Baseball Info Solutions Video Scouts who study every game, sports writers, former MLB outfielder Doug Glanville and

Ordonez, Guillen likely done in Detroit

DETROIT -- Tigers president Dave Dombrowski didn't make any startling announcements Tuesday in his year-end review with the local media. That, though, was to be expected. While Dombrowski has done more than his share of rebuilding projects in Detroit, this time he is working with a team that won 95 games, beat the New York Yankees in the first round of the playoffs and came...

Tigers Come Up Short in Gold Glove

No Tigers won a gold glove this year despite the fact that one was very deserving and another you could have made a major argument for.  Matt Wieters won at catcher and while I can live with that I do think Alex Avila has a great season behind the plate. WAR doesn’t really spell it [...]

Tigers Trivia Challenge – Rules, Tips and Prizes

Alright, baseball ended last week but I want to try to keep it alive.  If you’re a fan on my Facebook page, you’ve probably seen the trivia questions I’ve been posting.  Well, now it’s time to get serious. Beginning Monday, November 7, I’m going to kick off an off-season long trivia contest that will include [...]

Ready to take a look back at the performers of 2011 and what's in store for them in 2012? Head inside to read the 2011 player capsules! First up is the Tigers' breakout star catcher, Alex Avila, who slugged his way to starting the All-Star game.

Avila, Jackson Gold Glove finalists; not Peralta

Two Tigers could be announced as American League Gold Glove winners tonight -- Alex Avila at catcher and Austin Jackson in centerfield. But the Tigers' Jhonny Peralta won't win the Gold Glove at shortstop despite making only seven errors.

Magglio, Guillen not expected back in Detroit

Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen were crucial cogs in the Tigers' resuscitation from 119 losses in 2003 to the World Series three years later, and they were All-Stars after that. With age and injuries creeping up, however, they appear to be former Tigers.

Tigers Austin Jackson, Alex Avila shut out of AL Gold Gloves

In one vote announced Tuesday, Austin Jackson of the Tigers was selected as this season's best defensive centerfielder in the major leagues. The Fielding Bible put him on its 2011 all-defensive team. In another vote Tuesday, Jackson wasn't selected as the best defensive centerfielder in the American League.

Tigers don't expect Ordonez, Guillen back in '12

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski says it is highly unlikely free agents Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen will be back next season.

15,000 days ago: Detroit trades Denny McLain

There’s an old story, retold in many forms with various names attached to it. An unpopular and underachieving vet is traded from the team. When one of his teammates hears about it, he says, “It’s a great trade! Who did we get?” Perhaps the greatest of all “Great trade! Who’d we get?” deals occurred exactly 15,000 days ago today when the Detroit Tigers got rid...
