For the first time this year, the Boston Red Sox were outplayed in a series after being swept by the Texas Rangers over the weekend.  The Rangers starting pitching was no match for the Red Sox hitters as Boston was able to manage just four runs in the series. Yu Darvish’s start on Sunday was the highlight of the series as he struck out 14 Boston hitters on Sunday after surrendering two home runs to David Ortiz and David Ross early in the game. Jon Lester did rebound a bit on Sunday with a better start against Texas striking out seven in six innings and allowing just three runs after giving up six runs to Toronto last Tuesday. Another positive from this series was continuation of the 25 game hitting streak that David Ortiz has going for him dating back to last year. Ortiz also hit career home run 347 on Sunday and is now three away from 350 for his Boston career. Series notes: Red Sox struggles in Texas: Boston lost their last two series in Texas dating back to 2012 and are 1-5 in ...

David Ortiz’s First Career Home Run in 1997 Earns Ketel One Honorable Moment

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has hit 405 career home runs, and it all started in 1992. Big Papi made his big league debut for the Minnesota Twins, and went yard for the first time in the major leagues on September 14, 1997, hitting a fly ball deep into right field against Julio Santana and the Texas Rangers. The rest, as they say, is history. In 11 seasons with the Red Sox...

Can Yu Darvish strike out 300 hitters this year?

Yu Darvish is having an unreal sophomore season for the Rangers. In seven starts and 45 2/3 innings, Darvish has a 2.56 ERA, accrued 1.9 fWAR, and has struck out a league-leading 72 hitters. To put in perspective how vast the 15 strikeout difference between Darvish and second-place AJ Burnett is, consider the fact that Burnett could throw a nine inning complete game at his current...

David Ortiz’ quiet great hitting streak

David Ortiz’ hitting streak is starting to reach historic levels A couple of years ago, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins ended one season on some pretty absurd hitting streak. I don’t remember what it was on account of I’m not a Phillies fan nor am I motivated enough to look it up, I just remember it was a pretty long one. More importantly, it was getting a lot...

3 Stars of the game: Game 31

Well that certainly was not how anyone in the Red Sox organization wanted the series in Texas to go. The Sox dropped all 3 games to the Rangers, who now have allowed St. Louis and Texas to tie them with the best record in the major leagues at 20-11. Starting pitching was not the problem in the last 2 games of this series, the lack of run support was. Here are the 3 stars of the game...

Ross, Middlebrooks leave game after collision

After colliding while pursuing a foul pop-up in the top of the fifth inning, Red Sox catcher David Ross and third baseman Will Middlebrooks both exited Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Ross exited soon after the collision, while Middlebrooks stayed in the game for a couple of innings before Pedro Ciriaco replaced him at third base in the seventh inning. The team...

Ortiz hitting streak: Fuggedaboudit

The Guru Contributing Writer If last nights Red Sox 15-8 loss to the Twins had been a football game Bill Belichick would bury the ball in the end zone and say, "fuggedaboudit." While it's no crime to lose by a seven on the gridiron, it is another thing to lose by a touchdown on the diamond. However, these types of nights happen over the course of 162. Someone tell...

Rangers get 3-game sweep of BoSox

Yu Darvish struck out 14 and Adrian Beltre hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning as the Texas Rangers beat Boston 4-3 Sunday, completing a three-game sweep and matching the Red Sox for the best record in the majors. The Rangers, Red Sox and St. Louis all have 20-11 marks. Beltre lined a hit to right-center off Clayton Mortensen (0-2) that sent home Elvis Andrus, who...

Four Bases: Twins 15, Red Sox 8

April spoils have brought May turmoil. The Red Sox have now lost four out of their last five, and their pitching looks as thin as ever. There was no consolation prize either – David Ortiz went 0-5, ending his 27 game hitting streak. Here are the Four Bases: First Base: To say the least, Allen Webster‘s start was not the one that John Farrell was looking for. Despite his very...

Your Morning Dump...where another day, another injury for the Red Sox

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. According to Red Sox manager John Farrell, both David Ross and Will Middlebrooks were classified as day-to-day after leaving the Sox’ 6-1 loss to the Twins early Tuesday night. Middlebrooks (right side...

Red Sox Suffer Sloppy ‘Eighth Inning Uh-Oh’ Against Royals in Otherwise Forgettable Game (Video)

The Red Sox might have lost more than a game on Tuesday night after a couple of injuries left the team without Will Middlebrooks and David Ross for the later innings. That said, they still did lose a game in pretty unattractive fashion. Boston couldn’t solve Twins starter Scott Diamond and only scratched across one run in the ninth inning to avoid a shutout while falling 6-1 to...

Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester Becoming Aces Again Has Led Red Sox Back Into Contender Conversation

The Red Sox are sitting pretty atop the American League East standings, and the early returns of this season suggest that they’ll be there to stay. Thanks in large part to the team’s top of the rotation, the Sox have been able to regain the form that made them top contenders in years past — and that they lost down the stretch in 2011 and never found during a lackluster 2012...

Now, the unanimous answer has to be Clay Buchholz. Three things the Red Sox learned in Texas

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer U. G. L. Y. Yeah, it was that ugly over the weekend in Arlington, Texas. Red Sox starting pitchers gave up 12 runs in 14.2 innings, almost a run per inning.
