Earlier today we learned that the Toronto Blue Jays extended Edwin Encarnacion on a multi-year deal. This afternoon, more information is breaking out about the Dodgers new plan of action. Tim Brown is reporting that Ned Colletti and his front office staff are now targeting Aramis Ramirez. However, the Dodgers are said to still be making Chase Headley their number one priority.

Headley makes a lot of sense for the Dodgers, he's currently ranks fourteenth overall among MLB position players offensively, ranking second overall among MLB third basemen, behind only David Wright. Defensively, Headley ranks third overall among MLB third basemen, owning a .765 RZR, a 7.0 UZR, while also playing the most innings among all other MLB third basemen with 742.1 innings.

Back on 6/25 I suggested the Dodgers should turn their attention to Headley, perhaps finally everything is coming full circle. It was four days later rumors began to surface, that the Dodgers and Padres were discussing Headley.

Headley, 28, is hitting a respectable .267/.368/.413, with eight home runs, and 42 runs batted in heading into the second half. I tend to think he could improve those numbers outside Petco Park, especially inside Dodger Stadium where over his career he has hit .327/.409/.509, with 11 doubles, 15 RBI, and three home runs in 127 plate appearances.

I'm thinking the asking price is going to be pretty much the same for Aramis or Headley. That price figures to be four of the Dodgers top 10 prospects, and you can better believe Zach Lee will be one of them. My best guess is Zach Lee, Nate Eovaldi, Alex Castellanos, and Joc Pederson would be enough to land Headley. I also see names like Shawn Tolleson, Blake Smith, and Garrett Gould surfacing over the next couple weeks, and really it will come down to the needs of the other team. The Dodgers need for a third basemen are obvious, the Dodgers rank 26th in MLB with a combined .631 OPS.

Mattingly has used a combination of Jerry Hairston Jr., Juan Uribe, Adam Kennedy, Elian Herrera and Luis Cruz at the position leading up to the All-Star break. However, if you are looking at just Uribe and Kennedy the Dodgers would rank dead last. Hairston is more of a super-utility type, while Herrera and Cruz are getting their first real taste at the bigs. It will certainly be interesting to see how successful Colletti is now that he doesn't have the payroll restrictions he's had over the last several years.
