PHOENIX -- Little by little Diamondbacks pitcher Josh Collmenter is starting to look like the starter that played a key role in the team's run to an NL West crown last season. The only problem? The results still aren't there. Collmenter again improved on his last outing Tuesday but a pair of bad innings saddled him with a loss in a game the Phillies took 8-5. Despite Collmenter (0-2) allowing six runs on nine hits, including two home runs, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson liked what he saw. "He threw the ball the best he's thrown it all year," Gibson said. "Josh threw the ball well. I don't know what to say, he's throwing the ball much better than he was." Collmenter started the season with 10 earned runs in seven innings over two starts. His third start was his best to that point, as he went 5 13 innings and allowed four runs, two of which came in a hard luck inning. But it was clear Tuesday that Collmenter had his best stuff yet. The start w...

D-backs' Upton feels like himself again

PHOENIX Justin Upton is starting to feel good again, which should send a shudder through the rest of the National League. Upton can carry a team, as he did the Diamondbacks for a three-month stretch of 2011, and he showed indications of returning to those good old days in a 9-5 victory over Philadelphia on Monday that was 9-0 entering the ninth inning. He had his first RBI of...

Is it time to free Trevor Bauer?

The phrase "Free Trevor Bauer" has been popularized by ESPN analyst Keith Law in recent week. Bauer, the third overall pick in last summer's draft out of UCLA, is widely thought of as a guy who could have started the season in the majors. The Diamondbacks took the conservative route with Bauer, and started him at AA Mobile. In 22 2/3 innings, Bauer has struck out 28...

D-backs send struggling Paterson to minors

PHOENIX -- In a minor bullpen shakeup Tuesday, the Diamondbacks recalled Mike Zagurski and Joe Martinez from Triple-A Reno. In corresponding moves, the team optioned Joe Paterson to Reno and designated Jonathan Albaladejo for assignment. The right-hander Albaladejo, recalled Saturday when starter Daniel Hudson went on the disabled list, made his lone appearance Monday night, tossing...

Diamondbacks recall Joe Martinez

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Joe Martinez and selected the contract of left-hander Mike Zagurski from Triple-A on Tuesday. To make room on the roster, they optioned left-hander Joe Patterson to Reno and designated for assignment right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo. Patterson had not retired any of the final 10 batters he faced over two appearances, allowing seven...

The Arizona Diamondbacks learn the dangers of Twitter the hard way

Major League Baseball has made major strides in embracing social media and incorporating it into the game experience.  It is a wonderfully progressive trend for an otherwise very conservative league.  But sometimes these efforts to intertwine the online experience with the ballpark experience can go tragically wrong.  Or in the case of the Diamondbacks and their #GoDbacks campaign...

Daniel Hudson Latest D-back on the DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks have dealt with as many injuries this month as they did throughout all of last season. Top-of-the-rotation starter Daniel Hudson is the latest to suffer an injury, and the D-backs have decided to let swingman Wade Miley fill in rather than turn to one of their top prospects in the minors.

Games & players lost on miserable homestand

PHOENIX -- It was in many was the homestand from hell. The Diamondbacks lost seven games and three players in the 10-game homestand that concluded with a 7-2 loss to dominant Philadelphia left-hander Cole Hamels on Wednesday afternoon. Hamels retired 18 straight batters after Willie Bloomquist opened the game with a double, and the D-backs could not overcome the Phillies' four...

Nix leads Phillies' homer barrage against Diamondbacks

PHOENIX -- Laynce Nix has become a recent contributor in Philadelphia, and he is starting to work his way into manager Charlie Manuel's heart. "When you swing the bat like that, I like you," Manuel said after Nix had three hits, including one of the Phillies' three home runs in an 8-5 victory over Arizona at Chase Field on Tuesday. "I start to love you."...
