Bartolo Colon had won his previous eight starts, however Wednesday night was a different story for the AL pitcher of the month for June.
Matt Garza out-dueled Colon, keeping the A’s hitters off balance all evening, and the Chicago Cubs came up with enough timely hitting to beat the A’s 3-1.
“It was a good match up, two pretty good pitchers obviously. We just had a tough time figuring out Garza,” said Bob Melvin.
The Cubs struck early, notching a run in the first inning on a very uncommon occurrence. After giving up a single to Starlin Castro, Colon threw a wild pitch that allowed the Cubs shortstop to advance to second base. It was the first wild pitch thrown by the command-savy Colon since May 26, 2009, and it would come back to bite him as Alfonso Soriano blooped an RBI single into center field that would give the Cubs a lead that they would not relinquish.
