Found June 21, 2012 on Rockies Review:
Jeff Francis pitched very well and gave the Rockies a chance.A little starting pitching can go a long way. That was the lesson once again for the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night in Philadelphia. This time, however, the Rockies got to see firsthand what being on the right end of the strong pitching performance feels like.Jeff Francis, limited to 76 pitches due to the Rockies four-man rotation rules, pitched five strong innings. He gave up just one run on six hits. He struck out three while walking no one. The lone run came from Jimmy Rollins, who led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a blast to left field that had Rockies fans feeling like they were about to witness the same misery they have been throughout most of May and all of June.Instead, Francis put his foot down. He was efficient, pitching his way through five innings and handing the ball to the bullpen with his offense in a place where they had a chance to win.The offense did just that. Down 1-0, Chris Nelson drilled a ...

Losing continues for Colorado Rockies

Amazingly, it keeps getting worse for the Rockies. It was a game the Colorado Rockies should have won. They were one out away from securing the victory before the Phillies stole one away from them, winning 7-6.Rafael Betancourt couldn't get the final out in the bottom of the 9th inning, partly because of bad defense and partly because of poor pitch location. After getting two quick...

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery on his left groin area on Thursday and it's unknown when he'll return. Tulowitzki was injured May 30 against Houston, pulling up after running out an infield grounder. The All-Star shortstop took himself out of a game last Wednesday at Triple-A Colorado Springs after feeling not quite right. Rockies manager Jim...

Stupid Colorado Rockies Try to be Cute With Four-Man, Low-Pitch Rotation

In what might be the dumbest move that Major League Baseball has seen since the first and second time they thought a baseball team would work in Florida, the Colorado Rockies have gone to a four-man pitching rotation that will be limited to 75 pitches each start. Say what? We all know the magic number of pitches before a pitcher's arm falls off is 100 every fifth day. ...

Jeremy Guthrie Bucks the Trend

The Colorado Rockies starting rotation has been awful at preventing runs this season. Their collective 5.38 ERA and 4.56 FIP are easily National League worsts, and their walk and home run rates rank at or near the bottom as well. Pitching in Coors Field plays a big part in their performance — as their much improved 3.90 SIERA and 4.10 xFIP indicate — but overall, starting pitching...

Colorado Rockies can't get big hit against Texas Rangers, Roy Oswalt

Christian Friedrich took another step forward on Friday night. When it rains, it pours. The Rockies got a good performance from Christian Friedrich, but lost 4-1 to the Rangers. If things seemed like they couldn't get any worse for the Colorado Rockies, the Rangers had to choose this series for Roy Oswalt to make his Texas debut. The righty held out deep into the season before...

Freddie Freeman, Marco Scutaro Great Additions for Fantasy Baseball Owners (Video)

Freddie Freeman is having another outstanding year for the Braves. With the towering first baseman in Fenway Park over the weekend for a series with the Red Sox, it's about time to break down his fantasy baseball value. Same for former Red Sox and current Colorado rockies shortstop Marco Scutaro. Scutaro has been solid at the plate and in the field for the Rockies this season...

Desperate Rockies shuffle rotation

In the late '60s, with an expansion franchise that lost 100-plus games in five of its first six years -- and 95 games in the other -- the New York Mets decided they had nothing to lose. With that mind-set, they strayed from the accepted four-man rotation and decided to use a fifth starter on a regular basis. Whitey Herzog, who ran the Mets' farm system at the time, explained...

Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, June 21, 2012: Tulowitzki gets bad news, needs surgery

William Goldman is a Hollywood screenwriter, who famously wrote in his memoir “Adventures in the Screen Trade,” that “nobody knows anything.” Aside from his movies – “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Princess Bride,” “Misery,” - this quote may be his most enduring legacy. What Goldman was referring to, was the often unexplainable and unpredictable...

Bullpen Blowup

The Rockies lost a real heartbreaker Wednesday night when what would have been the final out of the ninth to send the game into extra innings turned into a walkoff win for the Phillies when Todd Helton's foot couldn't find first base. The Rockies bullpen lost their grasp on the game before that, however, and that's why I'm writing about them today.
