Jordan Pacheco is quietly having a great rookie year.Jordan Pacheco can hit. There is no denying that fact.Three weeks ago, when Colorado Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd addressed season ticket holders, there was a question about Pacheco from the audience. The man asking the question acknowledged that he was from New Mexico, where Pacheco is from, and therefore was biased towards him. However, he wanted to see how impressed O'Dowd was with the third baseman. The fan didn't get the answer he was hoping for, as O'Dowd was very quick to say that if Pacheco wants to be a regular, he needs to hit for more power. At this rate, O'Dowd might have a hard time convincing anyone that Pacheco shouldn't be in the everyday lineup somewhere. The Rockies third basemen, a stop-gap for Nolan Arenado, who is being groomed in Double-A, has done nothing but hit the ball. The rookie has done far more hitting than anyone expected and has done what every player in his situation trie...

Tough to care as Colorado Rockies play on

Baseball doesn't seem to matter after the day Colorado had.The Colorado Rockies played a baseball game on Friday night in San Diego. Carlos Gonzalez hit a grand slam. Earlier in the day, the Rockies dealt Jeremy Guthrie to the Kansas City Royals. The Rockies lost the game 9-5, but it didn't really matter. It all seemed pretty meaningless when compared with what the state that...

Rockies, Royals swap Guthrie, Sanchez

Jeremy Guthrie and Jonathan Sanchez — both acquired in deals this past offseason — were supposed to help the Rockies and Royals, respectively, find some stability in their rotations. That never really played out however, and on Friday the two teams engaged a rare double change-of-scenery deal. The deal had a time component to it. After designating Sanchez for assignment on...

Colorado Rockies offense disappears in loss to Padres

Christian Friedrich has been a big confidence boost for the Rockies.Christian Friedrich may be the biggest positive in a very negative season for the Colorado Rockies.Heading into spring training, the 2008 1st round draft choice had all of the markings of a bust. His progress had stalled. In his second season in Double-A Tulsa in 2011, Friedrich had posted an ERA of 5.05. He didn...

Colorado Shooting Victims Honored by Rockies Before Game (Photos)

The deadly shooting in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead and 59 wounded has sent the country into mourning. As expected, the Colorado Rockies have been hit particularly hard, with the site of the tragedy so close to home for the club. On Friday, the Rockies honored the victims of the shooting by hanging a black jersey in their dugout that read "We remember 7-20." The team...

Jonathan Sanchez-Jeremy Guthrie Swap Awesomely Terrible, Could Someday Spark Plenty of Laughter

Somewhere, someday, somehow, we could all sit back and have a good laugh about this one. In a deal that can only be described as heinous as this juncture of the baseball season, the Rockies and Royals have swapped a pair of struggling starters, with Jeremy Guthrie headed to Kansas City and Jonathan Sanchez gearing up for the Mile High City. On the surface, this deal is gross. Sanchez...

Royals Trade Jonathan Sanchez to Rockies for Jeremy Guthrie

Well it is actually official now; Jonathan Sanchez will not be back in a Royals uniform (hopefully). Sanchez was traded to the Colorado Rockies on Friday afternoon for veteran RHP Jeremy Guthrie. On paper this trade seems like a swap of two awful pitchers, but there is some hope and I am a fan of this move. If you concern yourself with the bottom line ERA for Guthrie (6.35), you...

Photos: Colorado Rockies honor theater shooting victims

These images show how the Colorado Rockies honored the victims of the horrific shooting in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that left 12 dead and injured 58 others. There was a moment of silence before game against the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. Rockies players wore the date “7-20” under their eyes and wore purple jerseys and black wristbands.

Top Play: Colvin and Venable make game saving catches

Fans of the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres have not had much to cheer about this season, as both clubs have fallen behind the NL West leading Giants by more than ten games. Although neither team looks to be playoff bound, they have produced some memorable moments with clutch home runs and game saving catches in the field. Saturday Night was a prime example, as right fielders...

MLB: Royals trade Sanchez to Rockies for Guthrie

Left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez was traded from the Kansas City Royals to the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. The Rockies save more than $1 million in the exchange of struggling veteran starters. Guthrie had been in the bullpen before recently returning to the Rockies' rotation. He was 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA with Colorado and began the season with losses in...

Three Pitching Stars of the Night in the Texas Collegiate League--July 22nd

Just a few games on the docket in the TCL last night, but below are my Three Pitching Stars of the Night from yesterday. Jordan Pacheco (Victoria--UTSA) is now 5-1 this summer after picking up the win. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowed just four hits and fanned 8 in his outing. Cameron Walker (Woodlands--Harding) allowed just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings pitched...
