It didn’t take long for some of the players who are in the Baseball Hall of Fame to share their thoughts on players like Bonds and Clemens not getting into Cooperstown. Some of the baseball greats were interviewed by the Associated Press and they explained why this was a great move for baseball. Former New York Yankees pitcher, Goose Gossage in an interview told the Associated Press ”If they let these guys in ever at any point it’s a big black eye for the Hall and for baseball. It’s like telling our kids you can cheat, you can do whatever you want, and it’s not going to matter. I think the steroids guys that are under suspicion got too many votes. I don’t know why they’re making this such a question and why there’s so much debate. To me, they cheated. Are we going to reward these guys?”   Former Oakland Athletics pitcher, Dennis Eckersley tweeted ‘ ‘Wow! Baseball writers make a statement. Feels right.” Detroit Tigers right fielder, Al Kaline gave his point of view in an interview saying, ”What really gets me is seeing how some of these players associated with drugs have jumped over many of the greats in our game. Numbers mean a lot in baseball, maybe more so than in any other sport. And going back to Babe Ruth, and players like Harmon Killebrew and Frank Robinson and Willie Mays, seeing people jump over them with 600, 700 home runs, I don’t like to see that.” To me the issue will be that any player that was in the “steroid era” who has increased his numbers and performed at a higher level as he got older will always be surrounded with questions if he ever used drugs to enhance his play. We will have to see if the Baseball Writers’ Association of America used this year as a statement to current players to make sure that steroids should not be used or if the players like Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa will never see their bust in Cooperstown. The argument could be made either way. One is that players might say hey everyone was doing it, so why can’t I use steroids to get more money and a longer contract? The other argument is that someone who used drugs to perform at a higher level robbed others who did not use steroids and fans and writers take an issue with. Just like this Hall of Fame ballot, I am looking forward to see what happens next year.
