PHOENIX -- Patrick Corbin gained confidence during spring training and regained his breaking ball in his most recent stint at Class AAA Reno. It is a clich, but his third time with the Diamondbacks this season really has been the charm. Corbin, 22, has made a strong impression since rejoining the starting rotation Aug. 1, having given up one earned run in two starts while throwing more strikes and showing more command of his slidercurve breaking ball. The first I came up here ... you dont want to be scared of these hitters, but you kind of are because this is your first time. Now, being called up for the third time, I feel a lot more comfortable and a lot more relaxed. Its kind of like just another baseball game, said Corbin, who will start the final game of the series with the Nationals on Sunday. He has a better idea of what it takes," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. He knows that he has to throw the ball over the plate. He cant just try to avoid contact. He understands that, and he understands why now. You can tell somebody all you want until they actually get here and experience it." Corbin, 3-4 with a 3.53 ERA, has seen a lot of the country this year. He opened the season at Class AA Mobile and won his major league debut April 30 in Miami after he was promoted to replace Josh Collmenter in the rotation. Corbin made five starts before being sent back to Reno when Daniel Hudson made a temporary return. Corbin rejoined the D-backs as long reliever June 28, staying two weeks before Joe Saunders was activated from the disabled list. In Reno again, Corbin was stretched out as a starter. Scouts who saw Corbin in his last few starts at Reno saw more depth in his breaking ball, and Corbin said he made a conscious effort to improve the pitch so he could bring it to the major leagues the next time he was called. I just feel the first time I wasnt throwing it enough, so I didnt get a feel for it. Maybe it was not trying to give up a hit instead of just going after the guys. Thats the thing I learned when I came up the second time: Just to go after these guys, Corbin said. Whether I am behind in the count or ahead in the count, I am mixing in my changeup and breaking ball and being able to get outs. I think thats the biggest thing: Not being afraid and throwing strikes and letting them put the ball in play.

Corbin's ascent continues as D-backs top Nats

PHOENIX -- Patrick Corbin's remarkable ascent up the Diamondbacks' organizational depth chart reached yet another high point Sunday when the rookie left-hander flat out dominated the best team in baseball. Few, if any, could have predicted before the season began that Corbin would for any stretch be the D-backs' best starter, but the 23-year has been exactly so since...

Arizona's Corbin proving he belongs

As left-hander Patrick Corbin showed again Sunday, and as cliched as it might be, the third time really can be the charm. Corbin commanded all three pitches in a 7-4 victory over Washington as the Diamondbacks salvaged the final game of a three-game series at Chase Field. It was his third straight quality start since rejoining the rotation on Aug. 1, when he was promoted...

Corbin goes 7, D-backs end Nationals' streak

PHOENIX (AP) -- Rookie Patrick Corbin allowed four hits through seven innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Washington 7-4 on Sunday, snapping the Nationals' season-high winning streak at eight games. Corbin (4-4) retired 16 in a row after Bryce Harper's infield single in the first. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up two runs, struck out seven and walked none. Paul...

D-backs place Collmenter on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Josh Collmenter on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with ulcers. Collmenter started the season in the rotation but demoted to the bullpen after four rocky starts. He returned to the rotation to make five starts and has posted a 3-1 record and a 2.41 ERA in his last 18 appearances. Collmenter is 3-3 overall with a 4.24 ERA in 22 games...

Center field becoming platoon-like for D-backs

PHOENIX -- Their Gerardo Parra bobblehead dolls safely stashed away, some in the Chase Field crowd seemed dismayed when Chris Young was called on to pinch-hit for Parra on Saturday night. They might not have liked it, but they could have seen it coming. Do not get manager Kirk Gibson started on the "p" word. He does not buy into platoons. But it is as good as any way to...

Diamondbacks 7, Nationals 4

Rookie Patrick Corbin allowed four hits through seven innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Washington 7-4 on Sunday, snapping the Nationals' season-high winning streak at eight games. Corbin (4-4) retired 16 in a row after Bryce Harper's infield single in the first. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up two runs, struck out seven and walked none. Paul Goldschmidt drove...

D-backs catcher Miguel Montero loses bat in stands, hits fan in leg (Video)

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero's bat flew into the stands and hit a female fan in the leg during his fourth inning at-bat in Friday night's MLB game at Chase Field against the Washington Nationals. Montero swung at a 1-0 pitch and it went flying about six rows back in the stands behind the D-backs dugout. The female fan grabbed the bat after it bounced...

Diamondbacks Sign Former UCLA-Commit Felipe Perez

The Los Angeles Times has reported this morning that the Diamondbacks have signed pitcher Felipe Perez, who was about to begin his freshman season at UCLA. Perez was rated as the #129 Draft Prospect by Baseball America heading into the June draft, and was projected to have the talent to go in the first five rounds.  But signability concerns caused him to go undrafted - in fact,...

D-backs done in by uncharacteristic mistakes

PHOENIX -- Miguel Montero summed up Saturday succinctly. It was a bad beat, he said. The Diamondbacks played a game quite unlike themselves at Chase Field on Saturday, a 6-5 loss to the NL East-leading Nationals in which they could not hold a 4-1 lead behind their best pitcher and top NL Rookie of the Year candidate Wade Miley. The D-backs self-destructed in the fifth inning,...

D-backs call up Elmore, put Bloomquist on DL

PHOENIX -- Jake Elmores promotion Saturday proves perseverance pays. Elmore was purchased from Class AAA Reno when the Diamondbacks placed Willie Bloomquist on the disabled list with a strained lower back, culminating a climb that began when he signed as a 34th-round draft choice in 2008 after a frustrating season at ASU. I think I was floating above my body for a while, said Elmore...

Red Sox reacquire OF Podsednik

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik just over a week after trading him to Arizona. Podsednik batted .387 with one home run and seven RBI in 19 games for the Red Sox before being dealt to the Diamondbacks on July 31. He was released by Arizona after declining an assignment to Triple-A Reno. Podsednik, who was batting ninth and playing left field Friday...

Sox to send Kalish down to make room for Podsednik

News came out yesterday that the Sox re-signed Scott Podsednik -- sent to Arizona in the Craig Breslow deal, but immediately released -- for the remainder of the season. The perplexing move was seemingly injury insurance, but now Dan Roche says the Sox are assigning Podsednik to the big club and sending down Ryan Kalish. I'm inclined to say this move is insane, but the motivation...

Corbin Latest Success For D-backs’ Rotation

The first time the D-backs lost Daniel Hudson to injury, it seemed like it would be a big blow to their playoff hopes, but Wade Miley stepped in and opened people’s eyes. When he went down the second time, it seemed like it would really put Arizona in a bind, as while Miley was by then a rotation fixture, Joe Saunders was out of action as well. Neither Josh Collmenter not touted...

Miley pulled early as D-backs fall to Nationals

PHOENIX (AP) -- Ryan Zimmerman singled in two of Washington's five runs in the fifth inning, and the Nationals rallied to beat the sloppy Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Saturday night, stretching their season-best winning streak to eight games. Jason Werth and Michael Morse each had an RBI double in Washington's big inning, which was aided by two Arizona errors and a wild pitch...

Nats Head To Arizona As They Continue Their Road Trip Out West

Not only do the Washington Nationals (69-43) comfortably posses the best record in baseball, they also have the best road record of MLB teams (37-21), which they will try to add on to this weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks (57-55). In the past, the Nationals and the Diamondbacks have been pretty evenly matched, splitting their wins in contests between the two teams just about...
