Kevin Kouzmanoff was just signed to a minor league deal by the Kansas City Royals,  Adam Rubin speculated that the Mets may be looking for a RH power bat for the bench who played 1b/3b making Kouz a perfect fit especially when you consider he played under this front office in San Diego.

It's also believed that they wouldn't promote a youngster for the bench, instead opting to get them more playing time in the minors.  But what if a player is projected to be a bench player and has struggled with injuries as a starter, it might make sense to use him off the bench in the majors.

Zach Lutz might be that type of player, despite dropping down on the prospect list due to injuries and age (25y/o), Lutz was ranked by Baseball America as the top power hitting prospect. Maybe the way to keep him healthy is to use him sparingly off the bench, last year he was considered a Sept. call-up candidate but post concussion symptoms ended his season.

The Mets’ September call-ups will be limited, and in two stages -- when rosters expand Thursday and after the Triple-A season ends Monday. Outfielder Mike Baxter will be part of the latter group. Among position players, the Mets seemed likely to promote two of three players among infielders Josh Satin, Zach Lutz and Valentino Pascucci. However, Lutz may land on the DL at Triple-A Buffalo with continued concussion symptoms, which presumably would eliminate his candidacy. source ESPN NY

The 25y/o has primarily played third base in his minor league career but has had some exposure to 1B including 14 games in Buffalo last year.  Despite only averaging 66 games a season in his first four he has also averaged  11 homesuns, 13 doubles and 44 RBIs.

I know some will argue the same could be said of Josh Satin but at 27 y/o with only 38 AAA games and hitting .200 in his first try in the majors he's looking more like a AAAA player to me.  Lutz could be the same type of player but with Turner having option I'd like to at least see a potential power threat on the bench then a non-power hitting third second baseman.  If Lutz is a flop then you can always bring Turner back up.
