One of the intriguing match-ups within the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals five game series is the match-up between the managers. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is managing in his first season and his first post-season.  Meanwhile, Nationals manager Davey Johnson has been around the block for a long time. Johnson clearly has the edge in experience and may have used some of that experience to his advantage in the eighth inning of the Nationals game one victory over the Cardinals. Before I explain, lets be clear.  The Cardinals lost this game because they left ten runners on base and were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.  They lost because they were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and no outs.  The Cardinals deserved to lose this game for these two reasons. But it also should be noted that Matheny was schooled by the elder Davey Johnson in the top of the eighth inning. After a Pete Kozma error and an Ian Des...

Cardinals fans parody Taylor Swift’s “We are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together”

St. Louis Cardinals fans Katie, Cori, Ashley and Jill took Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and twisted it into a song about the Cards going to the World Series, calling it, “Cardinals are Going, Going, Going to the World Series” The only thing more annoying in baseball right now is probably the cruddy infield fly call that helped the Cardinals...

Jaime Garcia reportedly will be removed from NLDS roster; Cardinals furious

The Cardinals reportedly plan to remove pitcher Jaime Garcia from their NLDS roster because of a shoulder problem, and his teammates are said to be furious with him over the issue. Garcia missed over two months of the season from June-August because of a shoulder injury that landed him on the 60-day disabled list. He pitched fairly well upon returning from the DL, lowering his season...

Cardinals Injury News: Lance Berkman, Jake Westbrook

Though Lance Berkman wasn’t able to return from his knee injury in time to be included on the St. Louis Cardinals’ National League Division Series roster, the veteran did offer words of encouragement to his team as they take on the Washington Nationals. "I just feel like, a lot of times, these games are about attitude, about the way you carry yourself.” Berkman said...

Cardinals' Garcia set for start in his home comfort zone

St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia, who suffered an 8-1 setback at Washington on Aug. 30, will start Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the Nationals on Monday. This time, he'll be pitching at Busch Stadium, where he tends to be much more successful. Garcia, who had come off the disabled list after recovering from shoulder soreness not long before...

NLDS Game 2: Come On Out And Get Your Whuppin'

#Natitude. Lulz. Have you met our little friend Carlos Beltran? Doesn't look like it because he completely wrecked your face. In fact, somebody check and make sure Jordan Zimmerman got on the NOT Happy Flight home, because he might still be shivering in a corner somewhere underneath Busch Stadium. Oh, and Jon Jay. Don't even think about forgetting Jon Jay....

Gonzalez, Wainwright set to duel in Game 1

ST. LOUIS - Adam Wainwright had his best start in nearly two months when he faced the Washington Nationals in his final regular season start. He's hoping for similar success Sunday. Six years after closing out the Cardinals World Series title in 2006, Wainwright will make just his second postseason appearance since when he starts Game 1 of their National League Division Series...

Disputed call takes spotlight in Cardinals' win

Worried that more debris could fly out of the stands, St. Louis players scrambled off the field and launched a wild-card celebration in the safety of their clubhouse. Players danced in a happy huddle. Champagne was sprayed. Then someone yelled ''Infield fly!'' Those were words that only the Cardinals could celebrate on this night. Matt Holliday homered and St....

Wainwright vs. Gonzalez in Game 1

Adam Wainwright was a glorified spectator last fall, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals from the bench as they rose from wild card to World Series champions. It's a lot more fun being part of the action. Every fan in in long-suffering Washington, D.C., anticipating the first postseason appearance for the nation's capital since 1933, has to feel that way, too. Wainwright...

Cardinals hit four homers, tie series 1-1

ST. LOUIS - Davey Johnson and the Washington Nationals have got an up-close look at the offense of the St. Louis Cardinals in the past 10 days - and he is getting awfully tired of it. After seeing the Cardinals twice explode for double-digit runs in their series in the final week of the regular season, Johnson had to watch it again, for the third time in a five-game span, in the...

NL Division Series Game Two: Cardinals 12, Nationals 4

The St Louis Cardinals smashed the Washington Nationals 12-4 on Monday in game two of their NL Division Series matchup, evening the series at one game apiece. In the first two innings, St Louis starter Jaime Garcia did his first impersonation of Gio Gonzalez on Sunday, walking three batters and not looking like himself at all. Of course, just like the Cardinals yesterday, the...

Cardinals 12, Nationals 4

ST. LOUIS - Allen Craig and Yadier Molina made certain nobody would be complaining about their poor at-bats for the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. So did a good many of their teammates, including Jon Jay and Carlos Beltran, as the Cardinals hit four home runs, including two by Beltran, to pound the Washington Nationals 12-4 in game two of the NL Division Series and even the best...

Nationals Win Postseason Debut As They Rally Over Cardinals 3-2 in Game 1 of NLDS

ST. LOUIS -- Pinch hitter Tyler Moore blooped a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning and the Washington Nationals won in their postseason debut, beating the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in 3-2 Sunday in an NL playoff opener. The Nationals overcame a wild start by 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez, then watched their bullpen shut down St. Louis in the late...

Cardinals rally after short start

Last GameThe Reds had yesterday off to make the trip home, but there was still a game of some interest to the Reds happening. The Cardinals hosted the Nationals for game two of their series. The Cardinals do not have the home-field advantage and had squandered their first chance in front of the “best fans in baseball” so it was particularly urgent to them to get the second game...

Nationals rally past Cardinals in Game 1

ST. The Nationals overcame a wild start by 21-game winner Gio Gonzalez, then watched their bullpen shut down St. Louis in the...

Scrabble and the Rookie

At this point, it might not make a whole lot of sense to talk about Sunday’s Game 1 of the Cardinals/Nationals NLDS, since Game 2 is already well underway at this writing. And if we’re going to talk about Sunday’s Game 1, it might not make a whole lot of sense to focus on just one single pitch. Game 1 featured several pitches, dozens of pitches, and each was important. But...
