ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Texas Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz left Friday night's game against Detroit because of lower back stiffness. Cruz appeared to get hurt in the seventh inning when he dived in an attempt to catch a ball hit by Austin Jackson. The ball bounced in front of Cruz, then over his glove and rolled to the wall as Jackson rounded the bases for the first inside-the-park home run of his career. Cruz appeared to be reaching to his back when the play was over, but stayed in the game. Two batters later, Cruz had an error when he dropped an easy popup that would have ended the inning. In the top of the eighth, Craig Gentry entered the game in center field. Josh Hamilton moved to left, and David Murphy went to right.

Rangers' rookie Olt capitalizes on opportunity

ARLINGTON, Texas Mike Olt seemed surprised to turn his locker chair around Saturday night and see about 10 media members waiting to get his thoughts on his first-career walk-off hit. The Texas Rangers rookie infielder capitalized on a pinch-hit opportunity in the ninth inning, singling home Nelson Cruz to earn a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Olt appeared calm afterward...

Mike Napoli fan gets image of the Rangers catcher shaved into back of his head

We’ve seen fans get images of their favorite athletes shaved into their hair before (see here and here), so it’s not like it’s such a big deal that this guy got Rangers catcher Mike Napoli’s likeness shaved into his head.  Still, you have to admire a person’s level of fandom that they’d be willing to walk around in public with a Napoli haircut for the month or so that...

Murphy finally gets it right against left-handers

The Rangers' lineup features a plethora of threats: outfielder Josh Hamilton, third baseman Adrian Beltre, second baseman Ian Kinsler, designated hitter Michael Young and right fielder Nelson Cruz. And none of them are the team's most dangerous hitter this summer. That honor belongs to outfielder David Murphy. Murphy's .944 OPS since June 1 leads the Rangers by...

Rangers place C Napoli on 15-day DL

The Texas Rangers have placed catcher Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list with a left quadriceps strain. The Rangers also have recalled catcher Luis Martinez from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Napoli on the roster. The moves were announced before their game Saturday night against the Detroit Tigers. Napoli started in his first All-Star game back in July and is hitting .223...

BP Unfiltered: Yu Darvish with Two Strikes by Dan Brooks

One way to look at how a pitcher attacks hitters is to look at what the pitcher throws in two-strike counts. In two-strike counts, pitchers often try to put hitters away with a breaking ball, induce weak contact with a sinker, overpower hitters with an extra-hard fastball, or throw a changeup with a bit of extra screw action. I hadn’t seen Yu Darvish pitch in quite some time,...

Fan gets Mike Napoli image shaved into head

Fan is short for fanatic. We’ve seen evidence of this numerous times over the years. Getting your favorite player tattooed somewhere on you is popular. Having players from your favorite team painted on your car has been done as well. Now we’re apparently at having a player’s likeness shaved into your head, like [...]

Wasted Chances: Tigers fall to Rangers 2-1 in bottom of the 9th

A shaky bullpen, runners left on base and a hapless offense doomed the Tigers in their 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday night. After getting the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth the Tigers once again failed to get the go-ahead run across home plate as both Boesch and Peralta simply couldn’t get the job done. In the following half inning Tigers reliever Brayan...

Feldman, Rangers lose to Tigers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Austin Jackson hit an inside-the-park home run and a triple and the Detroit Tigers beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 6-2 on Friday night. Jackson got his first career inside-the-park homer in the seventh inning after right fielder Nelson Cruz made a diving attempt to catch the ball, which bounced in front of him and then over his glove and to the wall...

Game 2012.114: Tigers at Rangers

61-52, 2nd place, 1 game behind CWS, tied for WC lead Despite allowing too many baserunners (10 in  6 innings; the Rangers had at least one base runner in every inning), Scherzer’s too many strikeouts got him out of one jam after another, and then Dotel and Valverde impressively shut the door on a 6-2 Tigers win. Today’s match-up looks to be the most favorable of the series...

Tigers-Rangers Preview

In a trend that began last postseason, the Texas Rangers have had little trouble beating the Detroit Tigers. They seem poised to continue that success now that Scott Feldman is suddenly pitching dominant ball. Feldman looks to win his seventh straight decision in Friday night's series opener between the AL West-leading Rangers and visiting Tigers. After a day off following...
