Jeff Samardzija scattered three hits over five scoreless innings for a Chicago Cubs split squad in a 5-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
Samardzija struck out three and walked one.
The Cubs were unable to capitalize on Nate Schierholtz's leadoff double in the second, but they took a 1-0 lead after Steve Clevenger opened the third with a double and Darwin Barney hit a one-out RBI single. The Cubs increased their lead to 2-0 on Starlin Castro's sacrifice fly later in the third.
Scott Hairston opened the fourth with a homer to left that gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead.
The Cubs increased their lead to 5-0 in the fifth on RBI singles by Dioner Navarro and Brian Bogusevic.
Losing pitcher Nick Tepesch allowed five hits, three runs, struck out two and walked one over five innings for the Rangers.

With news that the Cubs have tried to extend Jeff Samardzija beyond his arbitration eligible seasons not once, but twice, I thought it might be a good idea to look into how much he's worth. Steamer projects 2.4 WAR and ZiPS projects 3.3. You can see these yourself on Fangraphs. Let's just split the difference and go with 2.9. Samardzija has 3 years of arbitrtation, including...
John Heyman passes along a few nuggets today with respect to the Cubs' efforts to extend Jeff Samardzija. JefF7 is three years from free agency, and the Cubs have apparently made two distinct efforts to extend him, to no avail. The two are apparently far enough apart that talks are on hold. We have had some word about this previously, but Heyman provides more:
Word is, the Cubs...
The Cubs’ plan since day one of Spring Training was to have outfield prospect Javier Baez start the year in the minor leagues, either in High-A ball or at Double-A.
Sunday the Cubs stayed true to their plan by demoting the 20-year old to their minor league camp, but not before he opened some eyes and dropped some jaws during his limited time.
Baez ended his stint in big-league...
I am sorry to report the following news, but the Chicago Cubs have decided to cut super star prospects Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. Now, before you start having a panic attack, they did not release them from their contracts. They simply decided to reassign them to the minor league camps, a move which will be made official tomorrow.
Soler will be assigned to Class A Daytona tmrw,...
The long wait for Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Scott Baker is over.
Baker made his 2013 Spring Training debut on Sunday, March 17, ending his time
on the disabled list. Baker pitched only a third of an inning against the Oakland Athletics, allowing three runs on three hits in his first
live competition since 2011.
Baker missed all of 2012 while recovering from Tommy...
The Cubs will be playing two games today. One against the White Sox that will be televised on WGN and one against the Japanese national team that will not be televised.
Here is the Cubs lineup for the televised game:
Hooray. I'm interested in Castro. That's all...
Last year, Starlin Castro split time evenly between batting second, third, and fifth—not what you’d expect from a speedy shortstop with fairly average power for a middle infielder. Ideally, you would expect him to stick in the number two hole because he lacks the on-base skills to be a leadoff hitter. Well, because of his [...]
Welcome back to another addition of how the Chicago Cubs have been stupid. I know that there are many ways that the typical Cub fans believes the Cubs are stupid, but you may be disappointed as this blog is not about what you think. This blog will not be about trading away various players, or signing others. If you read my last blog on this subject, you would get the idea of what...
My friend has completed a cycle of 28 winters and as is custom we got together to enjoy drink, song, and women. We got a fairly late start to the festivities as I was being lame and updating this site. We still celebrated with panache. As the night progressed we got the order mixed up and we started to enjoy song, women and drink, then it was drink, drink and drink. Either way it...
Alfonso Soriano connected for one of three first-inning homer against Bruce Chen and a Chicago Cubs split squad beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 Saturday.
David DeJesus led off the game with a homer to right field. Then after Brent Lillibridge doubled and Anthony Rizzo struck out, Soriano hit his second of spring training. The 20-year-old Javier Baez followed with another long ball...

Unfortunately, my lack of cable and the lack of accessible online streaming of the games in this year’s WBC meant that I couldn’t watch any games live. I was, however, able to follow along on Twitter and via Gameday, so that was cool. As a naturalized American citizen I was disappointed that the USA couldn’t move on to the semifinals in San...
