PLAYERS: Jason Hammel
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs's Jon Heyman confirms that the Cubs have agreed to a deal with right-hander Jason Hammel. Heyman adds that the one-year contract will pay Hammel $6 million for 2014 with the opportunity to make another $1 million in incentives. Hammel, 31, pitched to a 4.97 ERA (85 ERA+) and 2.00 K/BB ratio in 139 1/3 innings for the Orioles last season. Of his 26 appearances, 23 were starts. He missed more than a month because of an elbow strain. For his career, Hammel owns an ERA+ of 94 across parts of eight major-league seasons.

Cubs sign pitcher James McDonald to minor league deal

The Chicago Cubs struggled last season with only 66 wins, mostly attributed to a lack of offense. The pitching staff compiled a respectable 4.00 ERA, but had only two pitcher,  Jeff Samardzija and Travis Wood, make more than 30 starts.  Samardzija, Wood and Edwin Jackson were the only pitchers with more than 175 innings pitched.  In attempts to bolster their pitching depth, the...

Cubs buy low on Jason Hammel

The Chicago Cubs bought low to upgrade their rotation, signing former Baltimore Oriole Jason Hammel to a one-year contract worth $6 million with an additional $1 million in incentives. Hammel struggled in 26 appearances in 2013 due to a strained right elbow, and only made 20 starts in his breakout 2012 due to right knee problems that lingered nearly all season. 2012 was Hammel...

Chicago Cubs sign Jason Hammel: Add to Rotation

Chicago Cubs Baseball - The Chicago Cubs have just signed  Jason Hammel to a one-year $6 million contract pending physical. With the Cubs’ hot hitting prospects, this was an important step. Cubs Fill Out (presumably) the Starting Rotation The Cubs lost out on their bid for Masahiro Tanaka last month and have been working on finding another starting pitcher since. With the addition...

Could the Cubs Be On the Verge of Buying the Rooftops?

This morning on WSCR 670 The Score, the idea of Tom Ricketts and the Chicago Cubs buying the rooftops was suggested to representatives of both the Cubs and the rooftop owners. Strangely enough, the idea was not shot down by either side which leads to the possibility that this may be the end game both sides are hoping for. This would be the best outcome for everyone, and make both...

Cubs Sign Jason Hammel

In the move that anyone could have predicted once the Cubs missed out on Tanaka, they have come to terms on a deal with RHP Jason Hammel.  The 31-year old hasn't had much of a career to-date between Tampa, Colorado and Baltimore (94 ERA+), but his stuff has always been heralded and he did have a very nice 2012 for the Orioles(123 ERA+).  It'll be another hopeful reclamation...

Cubs Sign James McDonald

It's a minor-league deal with a NRI to major-league camp. The Cubs signed two righthanders off the scrap heap Friday. They spent $6 million (plus $1 million of incentives) for ex-Ray, Rockie and Oriole Jason Hammel. They spent virtually nothing -- a minor-league deal with a non-roster invitation to spring training -- on another righthander with possibly even more upside than Hammel.

Theo Epstein’s minor league vision taking effect for Cubs

In Theo We Trust.  That should be the motto of Chicago Cubs’ fans after released its Top 100 minor league prospect list last week.  When Theo Epstein assumed the position of President of Baseball Operations prior to the 2012 season, he promised to build the Cubs’ minor league system into the premier one in baseball. The results have been astounding. Not only did...

Building a Consensus On Cubs Prospects

When individual prospect listings come out from the different ranking services, often times we talk about those rankings without putting them into any context.  The reality is, different scouts value different things.  Some may rank a prospect based on having a higher floor, some may value a higher ceiling, and some may look for the best mix of projectable qualities in an individual...

The Cubs’ Idea So Nice They’re Trying It Twice

The Cubs weren’t going to win in 2013, and everyone knew it. The organization had begun to find its way, but it was understood it would be a long process, and 2013 would be more about development. That didn’t mean, however, that the Cubs would be inactive in free agency, and one of the things […]

Hot Sports Take, Countdown to Spring Training: #14

By tomorrow evening, we will have about 10 inches of snow on the ground, and I really apologize, I hate to continue talking about the weather, but that’s really the only exciting thing that is going on here in Chicago. (Not counting the Cubs agreeing to terms with Jason Hammel and James McDonald, of course.) As I’ve mentioned numerous times, this Winter has been brutal! That’s...
