PLAYERS: Darwin Barney
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
There's one good way to get the OPS elevated. Second baseman Darwin Barney did just that in Friday's 5-4 victory over the Cardinals in 11 innings. Barney hit a game-tying two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. There's no questioning Barney's defense. He might be the Gold Glove front-runner. But Sveum said he'd like to see Barney get his OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) up over .700. It sat at .690 after Friday's game. "Obviously, you want the OPS to be over .700," Sveum said. "That kind of defense is saving runs constantly, every single day." Barney probably won't elevate the OPS with slugging. He has a career-best seven homers this year. His on-base percentage was under .300 recently, but it had risen to .314 Friday. "Do what he's been doing the last couple of weeks would be just fine," Sveum said. "I'm sure he's at about a .400 on-base percentage the...

Starlin Castro will end up with 4 years of arbitration

This is something I've been meaning to write for at least a month, but just haven't gotten around to it. About 4-6 weeks ago I read in more than one place about how Starlin Castro would become a super-two eligible player, which means he'd have 4 years of arbitration eligibility rather than 3. The articles [...]

Cubs opening bar at O’Hare

The Chicago Cubs are looking to take advantage of their brand and opening up a shop at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Only thing is it’s not a Cubs themed retail store like you’d assume, it’s a bar. The team reached a licensing agreement with the cities Department of Aviation and with that the former O’Hare Bar and Grill becomes the The Cubs Bar and Grill next...

Brett Jackson has struckout 53 times in 125 plate appearances. Darwin Barney has struckout just 50 times in 540 plate appearances. Jackson has more strikeouts on the Cubs than all players but Alfonso Soriano, Bryan LaHair, Starlin Castro and David DeJesus. By the way, can we stop referring to Castro as a contact hitter? How [...]
