It’s like that nightmare where you show up to school in nothing but your underwear actually happening in real life. Less than a week after I took time to crunch the numbers and determine that Kevin Gregg was the worst closer in Cubs history, the team signed the goggle-wearing blown save machine to a minor league deal. I actually had to double-check to make sure this wasn’t some sort of cruel hoax, but multiple sources confirm that this isn’t some sort of terrible April Fool’s joke. At least this time he was signed to a contract befitting his talent level. Gregg, who was released by the Dodgers at the end of spring training, is reporting to the Cubs extended spring training camp in Mesa, Arizona. The Cubs are already in a bullpen bind two weeks into the season. Carlos Marmol was demoted from the role, and replacement Kyuji Fujikawa was placed on the 15-day disabled list. No telling if or when Gregg will get called up to the big-league roster, but the fact he’s being considered for any type of role is a pretty good indicator of how desperate this team is for help. It’s hard enough knowing this team will lose 90-plus games this season. Apparently now we’ll also have a chance to throw in the occasional painful acid flashback from the guy who helped squander the Cubs last decent season.
