The Chicago Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Miguel Socolovich off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa. Catcher Blake Lalli was designated for assignment to create a spot on the 40-man roster. Socolovich, 26, was 4-0 with two saves and a 1.90 ERA in 28 relief appearances at Triple-A Norfolks. He struck out 52 hitters in 52.0 innings of work, compared to 14 walks, and limited the opposition to a .179 batting average (33-for-184). Socolovich was named an International League mid-season All-Star, having posted a 1.77 ERA (9 ER/45.2 IP) in 24 games prior to the Triple-A All-Star break. Socolovich is 36-27 with a 3.71 ERA in 223 career games (44 starts) in the minor leagues since in January 2004 by the Red Sox. He has struck out 427 batters and issued 205 walks in 494.2 innings pitched. Acquired by the White Sox from Boston in a three-player deal in January 2008, Socolovich was named a Southern League midseason All-Star in 2010 at Double-A Birmi...

Cubs fan lands on head, loses chunk of scalp

Ouch. That’s gotta hurt. Leaving a chunk of your scalp on the playing surface while trying to snag a souvenir ball? So bad on so many levels. Although the video does not provide the precise date and game during which this Chicago Cubs fan went all topsy-turvy, chunk-of-hair-losey, it’s reasonable to surmise that it occurred during the [...]

Orioles recall LHP Matusz, designate J.C. Romero

The Baltimore Orioles have recalled left-hander Brian Matusz from Triple-A Norfolk and assigned him to the bullpen, a radical change for the long-time starter. Matusz has pitched in 68 major league games, all of them starts. The Orioles had him serve as a reliever in four games recently with Norfolk, and he did well enough to warrant a look at the big league level. Manager Buck...

The Orioles Are Out-Winning Their Run Differential

A lot has been made this year (including by me) about the Orioles' run differential (bad) not matching up with their actual record (good). The O's have been outscored by 45 runs, which would indicate that they should be more like 57-66 than 66-57 - and their other non-W-L stats back up that kind of view (below average offense, poor defense, OK pitching-staff). It's the...

Nick Markakis: Mr.Consistent

Baltimore’s Nick Markakis continues to get it done For anyone who watches Orioles games regularly you notice a few different things. Jim Palmer is head over heals in love with Jim Palmer, J.J “ballso” Hardy catches everything hit within 100 feet of him, and Nick Markakis has no emotions what so ever. In fact it almost looks as if Markakis has the most miserable job on...

Slowly Back Away from the Pythag Expectation

For most of 2012, the Baltimore Orioles have been playing over their heads. Well, at least when it comes to their expected win-loss record. Based on the run differential the team has generated, the O’s have amassed 10 more wins than we would expect based on their Pythagorean winning percentage. The team has outplayed its cumulative expected winning percentage throughout the year...

Orioles need a good home stand, but powerful teams are coming to town

The Orioles kick off a seven game home stand tonight that will have the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox in town for three- and four-game series respectively. The Orioles have fared well against the Blue Jays this season going 5-4 including a three game sweep at home against the rival AL East club. While the Orioles are still poised to make a solid run at one of the two...

Orioles Pull One Out in Texas; Rubber Game Tonight...

Again, the Baltimore Orioles continue to amaze. It is now August 22nd and they are still in the playoff hunt, plus they still hold the second wild card spot. The amazing season continued as they won again, this time in Texas against the Rangers, 5-3. After a loss on Monday night, they bounced back yesterday as Chris Tillman’s (6-2) nice outing combined with the bullpen and a...

Davis homers on first 3 ABs vs Blue Jays

Chris Davis homered in each of his first three at-bats for the Baltimore Orioles against the Toronto Blue Jays, but couldn't continue the power display in his fourth trip to the plate. Davis hit solo shots off starter Carlos Villanueva in the second and fourth innings Friday night and added a two-run drive against Steve Delabar in the sixth to put Baltimore up 5-1. Facing Brad...

Walbeck still follows Twins from afar

Twins career: Matt Walbeck, now 42, played with Minnesota from 1994-96. During his time with the Twins, Walbeck, a catcher, played in 275 games, the most he played for any team during his 11-year major league career. He batted .230 with 103 RBI and eight home runs during those three seasons. After breaking into the league in 1993 with the Chicago Cubs, Walbeck was traded to Minnesota...

Orioles Press Release: Mike Mussina and Rich Dauer to be inducted into Orioles Hall of Fame tomorrow

From the good folks at the Baltimore Orioles... *** Mike Mussina and Rich Dauer to be inducted into Orioles Hall of Fame tomorrow On Saturday, August 25, the Orioles and Oriole Advocates will hold a formal induction ceremony prior to their 7:05 p.m. game with the Toronto Blue Jays to honor 2012 Orioles Hall of Fame inductees MIKE MUSSINA and RICH DAUER and Herb Armstrong Award...

Davis homers in first three at-bats

Stepping to the plate with a chance to become the 17th player in baseball history to hit four home runs in a game, Chris Davis had one thing in mind. ''I was thinking about trying to work a walk,'' Davis said with a wry grin. Davis didn't get that fourth homer, but three was quite enough to power the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-4 victory over the skidding Toronto...

Assorted Notes from Wednesday’s Beloit-Peoria Game

The author attended Wednesday night’s game — or, at least, the first eight innings of it — between the Class A Midwest League affiliates of the Minnesota Twins (the Beloit Snappers) and Chicago Cubs (the Peoria Chiefs) in Beloit, Wisconsin. Below are some notes on same. Please note: none of what follows constitutes Official Prospect Analysis. Regarding Miguel Sano and Jorge...
