All is not right for the Cubs when they face a left-handed pitcher.

They faced another one Sunday night as the Red Sox threw lefty Franklin Morales at them. The Cubs came away empty-handed, falling 7-4.

It's been a strange season for the Cubs against left-handed starters. They entered Sunday batting a collective .224 against southpaws, and their record fell to 3-15 in games started by lefties.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum seemed at a loss to explain it.

"It's almost a fluke," he said. "Coming into the season, like I said, I thought that would be one of our strong points offensively because we stick a lot of right-handed hitters out there who have had really nice careers against left-handed pitching. Not that they're doing horrible, but we're not getting the slugging percentage at all against left-handed pitching, and it's holding us back from scoring multiple runs in an inning and stuff like that.

"Last night (Saturday), we got a three-run homer from our only left-handed hitter in our lineup (against Boston lefty Jon Lester). We need more of that from our right-handed hitters to put up crooked numbers in an inning."

Sveum has made a habit of stacking his lineup with almost all right-handed hitters when the opposing team starts a lefty. That means dependable players such as first baseman Bryan LaHair and right fielder David DeJesus are out of the starting lineup for those games.

Does he think of changing that practice?

"You think about that just because of the numbers we're putting up," Sveum said. "When our left-handers just aren't doing anything on a consistent basis against left-handed pitching, either, to warrant that, we're still trying to get more hits. We're just not really scoring runs. The guys are doing a nice job of getting the hits. It's just the slugging percentage we're having trouble with."
