TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have fired highly regarded hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. Jaramillo had been with the Cubs since the 2010 season, and his hiring was based on 15 years of success with the Rangers and their high-octane offense. The Cubs brought him in to boost their struggling offense, but nothing really materialized, and the team dismissed him with the team holding just a .689 OPS and 49 homers this season. During Jaramillo's two and a half year tenure in Chicago, the Cubs offense never improved in the way that the front office imagined when they brought Jaramillo in after the 2009 season. Since 2010, the Cubs hit just 346 homers (in the bottom half of the league) and had a .714 OPS (also in the bottom half of that league). Contrast that to Jaramillo's former team in Texas, which has won two AL pennants since his departure while homering 454 times (fourth in baseball), and OPSing .783 (third best in baseball). Just by looking at the raw stats, it appears that Jaramillo wasn...

How much is Ryan Dempster’s Trade Value?

Ryan Dempster entered the 2012 season in the final year of his contract. He was coming off season in which his ERA had ballooned to 4.80, but his FIP and xFIP were in line with what he'd done as a starter since 2008. His FIP was 3.91 and he had an xFIP of 3.70. The projections had him at a 3.92 FIP this year. The WAR projection was 2.4. Berselius did using FIP and Fangraphs uses...

Does Alfonso Soriano have any trade value?

The simple answer to this question is that he does not have any trade value, but simple isn't good enough. That's especially true when you're talking about a player who is still owed $43.5 million through the end of 2014. The Cubs tried hard this offseason to find some team interested in taking him and didn't have much luck. We don't know what the Cubs were really...

The Children Are The Future- Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by Kodak

Iowa What more can be said about Rizzo? Another night another pair of HR's and a ringing ground rule double. The future looks bright at 1B. Josh Vitters was 2-4 with a BB as well. Also, can somebody tell me why Jay Jackson still has a job? Smokies Trey McNutt's ERA finally caught up with his secondary #'s as he was rocked last night. 9 hits and 8 ER in 3.1 IP will do...

An analysis of the Jorge Soler deal: I guess it’s worth it after all

Despite all of my grumbling about the rumored pricetag for Jorge Soler, I was ecstatic when the initial reports today said that the Cubs had signed him to a 9/30 contract. Then we discovered that whenever he has enough service time to be elgible for arbitration, he can opt out of the deal and go through the usual arbitration process to get a higher salary. After thinking on this...

Cubs sign Jorge Soler

The Cubs apparently signed Jorge Soler today. I hear the #Cubs won out for Jorge Soler. #Yankees tried, but didn't get him. — Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) June 11, 2012 Bed Badler of Baseball America wrote about Soler a few days ago here. He talks about the way in which he was declared a free agent. Jim Callis wrote more about the player in February: Yoenis Cespedes would...

Conan proposes new Cubs mascots

Conan O’Brien was at it again on his late night show and had some fun at the Chicago Cubs’ expense. Conan had a skit where he came up with some new alternative mascots for the lovable losers, Chicago Cubs. A few of the highlights included the ‘incontinent Chicago Water Tower’, Hal Capone, a Cubs batter who can’t hit a pinata, and the Jesse Jackson 5. Article found...

Dan Vogelbach singled twice, doubled, drove-in three runs, and scored three more, Carlos Penalver collected three singles and two RBI and scored two runs, and Danny Lockhart had four hits (three singles and a double) and scored twice, leading the AZL Cubs to a 12-6 victory over the Boise Hawks this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.Rock Shoulders (two singles, a double,...

AP source: Cubs agree with Cuban OF Jorge Soler

A person familiar with the deal say the Chicago Cubs have reached an agreement with Cuban free agent outfielder Jorge Soler. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because nothing was officially announced Monday. The 20-year-old Soler was sought after by several teams and is considered a five-tool player who will require some minor league seasoning....

Dodgers Actively Pursuing Ryan Dempster

Danny Knobler of CBSSports is reporting via Twitter that the Dodgers are "definitely interested" in a trade for Cubs' right-hander Ryan Dempster. Knobler notes that the Dodgers were also interested in Dempster two years ago, but that the veteran right-hander didn't want to leave and the Cubs ultimately decided to keep him around. Of course, things could be...

Report: Cuban Soler signs with Cubs for nine years, $30 million

The Cubs went to great lengths to outbid the competition for Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler. CBS Sports analyst Jon Heyman reported the contract was worth about $30 million over nine years. Soler, 20, is a right-handed power-hitting outfielder. His contract rights were expected to something in the neighborhood of the four-year, $36 million deal signed by Yoenis Cespedes with the...

Cubs Win Bidding for Jorge Soler

The new collective bargaining agreement essentially puts an end to the kinds of bidding wars for young Cuban prospects that we’ve seen over the last few years, but those rules don’t go into effect for another month, so 20-year-old outfielder Jorge Soler was not bound by the new rules and was free to negotiate as large of a contract as he could get from big league clubs. Today...

Game 61 Thread - Maholm vs. Scherzer

The Cubs are actually an almost reasonable 12-15 at home, so maybe they won't get crushed tonight. But as Cubnut noted on Twitter the other day, the Cubs record in last 22 games that didn't involve the San Diego Padres is 2-20. Tigers Cubs Jackson, CF *Campana, CF *Boesch, RF Castro, SS Cabrera, 3B *DeJesus, RF *Fielder, 1B Soriano, LF Young, LF *LaHair, 1B...

Cubs' declining OBP led to firing of Jaramillo

More than anything else, it was a difference in philosophy that led to the Cubs firing hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo on Tuesday. Cubs president Theo Epstein announced the firing and the promotion of minor league hitting coordinator James Rowson to the job of interim hitting coach before the Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 at Wrigley Field.. Jaramillo was hired in the fall of...
