Cubs fans might not need to hurry to order Javier Baez jerseys in time for the start of the 2014 season. That's because general manager Jed Hoyer believes the Cubs' prized prospects could benefit from more seasoning in the minors despite producing one of the minor leagues' most impressive offensive seasons. "Listen he's really talented" Hoyer said Tuesday night before Edwin Jackson snapped a four-game losing streak with seven innings of one-run ball and hitting a home run to lead the Cubs to a 9-1 victory over the Reds. "I still think he has development left. We're going to go into spring training with that mindset." There are a few boxes to be checked off before Baez 20 cracks the 25-man roster in the eyes of Cubs officials. The biggest question which could be answered as soon as the Arizona Fall League is whether Baez will remain at shortstop where he committed a combined 44 errors at Class-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. Hoyer who takes note of the Cardinals' ability to maximize the versatility of their players would like to do the same with the Cubs' prospects and could follow through this fall when Baez third baseman Kris Bryant and outfielders Albert Almora and Jorge Soler play for Mesa. "(Baez) played better defense in Tennessee" Hoyer said. "He will cut down his errors through playing but we want to move him around to second third and be able to play different positions." There's little question however about the legitimacy of Baez's 37 home runs 111 RBIs and .282 batting average including 20 homers and a .638 slugging percentage in 54 games at Tennessee. "It's a pretty special list" Hoyer said. "(But) he has some things he needs to work on.''
