Entering the season, the 2013 Chicago Cubs bullpen needed a lot of help. That is why team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer went to Japan and brought back closer Kyuji Fujikawa from the Hanshin Tigers of the Japan Central League. A very successful closer for Hanshin, Fujikawa signed a two-year contract with the Cubs worth $9 million plus a club option for 2015. All seemed well until the season started — and so did the arm troubles. BADBOY_1975, UCinternational, via Wikimedia Commons Fujikawa did not pitch well at first. In five April appearances, he won one, lost one, and saved two but with a 12.46 ERA. Then, a forearm strain disabled him from April 12 to May 10. Fujikawa returned from the disabled list looking much more like the pitcher who saved 220 games in Japan, 219 of them from 2006-2012. He had a 1.17 ERA in seven appearances but recorded no decisions or saves. By then, the Cubs had signed Kevin Gregg as the closer. Fujikawa, though, had more arm soreness, ...
