Dunedin Blue Jays 1 @ Daytona Cubs 6 Kris Bryant led the way with 2 hits and a single. He also had enough RBIs by himself to win. The only extra-base hit was a double by Pin-Chieh Chen to lead off the Cubs in the bottom of the 1st (he'd come to score on a move to 3rd off a Zeke DeVoss fly out and a wild pitch). Dan Vogelbach and Dustin Geiger also singled, as did Elliot Soto. The pitching was pretty great. New Cub Corey Black went 5 scoreless, scattering a quintet of hits as a single walk, fanning nine. Frank of the Valley pitched 2 scoreless, and Austin Reed followed it up with a scoreless frame of his own. Lendy Castillo surrendered the only Cubs run of the day, but it was unearned; an Elliot Soto error botched double play put Marcus Knecht in scoring position for a line drive to score. Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 0 @ Boise Hawks 3 The Hawks had 11 hits, but only pushed 3 across. Both Kevin Encarnacion and Yasiel Balaguert had a trio of hits, but Balaguert had 2 RBI and Encarnacion...

WATCH: Female Wayne and Garth turn heads at Cubs game

“Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World, Party Time, Excellent”.  The riff made famous by Saturday Night Live legends Mike Myers and Dana Carvey during their sketches and later, two full feature movies.  Not forgotten is that Wayne and Garth were from Aurora, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.  Two young female Cubs fans dressed up on honor of the “screen legends” in a hilarious...

2013 Cubs Prospects in Review: Logan Watkins

For some reason, I was thinking that Logan Watkins was drafted in the 3rd round in 2008. He did sign for $600,000, which was probably 2nd round money considering the Cubs draft order that year (maybe even higher at that time), but he lasted until the 21st round. He had a strong committment to Wichita State. Watkins weighs 175 pounds and stands 5-11. He's right-handed and bats...

Cubs prospects: A Josh Vitters’ resurgence in 2014?

Today, we finish our 2013 features of Chicago Cubs prospects with two apiece from the AA Tennessee Smokies and the AAA Iowa Cubs.  Tennessee finished its regular season 76-62 and claimed the second half North Division title of the Southern League.  Iowa missed the postseason after finishing with a record of 66-78.  Let’s get to our player profiles. Tennessee Smokies: Yeiper...

2013 Cubs Prospects in Review: Corey Black

The 5-11, 175 pound righty was acquired from the Yankees in the Alfonso Soriano trade on July 26th. Corey Black was selected in the 4th round in the 2012 Draft our of Faulkner University. He was born on on August 4, 1991. Player ages in baseball are the age of the player before August 1st so this is technically Black's age 21 season. Performance Corey Black split time (mostly...

2013 Cubs Prospects in Review: Willson Contreras

Willson Contreras is only 21, but has been in the Cubs' organization for 5 years. An unheralded IFA from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, Contreras spent two years in the Dominican Summer League before making his stateside debut in Boise 2 years ago. In the 5 years he's played for Cubs affiliates, he's done yeoman's work, playing adequate defense with mediocre offensive...

Cubs would do well to give Scott Baker September innings

For Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Scott Baker, the 2013 season has not produced much promise. After missing all of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery, Baker and the Cubs had anticipated that he pitch in Wrigley Field by this year's All-Star break. That obviously did not happen. Baker may not pitch at all in 2013 either even though the rosters have expanded for the September stretch...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 9-2-13

Iowa Cubs 1 @ Nashville Sounds 2 Mike Olt was 0-2 with 2 walks. Olt had 22 hits in Iowa, and 20 walks. He struck out 37 times. He went from a Top 100 prospect before the year began to "maybe not as good a prospect as Christian Villanueva." Olt finishes his Cubs season with a .551 OPS.  Kyle Hendricks ended the I-Cubs' season with a strong performance but took the...

2013 Cubs Prospects in Review: Trey Masek

Trey Masek was one of the more intriguing arms that the Cubs picked up in the 2013 draft. Originally slated to go in the first round, a bout of shoulder tendinitis knocked his stock down considerably. While Baseball America had Masek as high as 48th, Masek actually went with the 138th pick in the draft. The slot value for the pick was $357,400, but the reason he probably fell to...

These Wayne’s World Cubs Fans Are My New Crush. Get The Net!

Wayne’s World Cubs fans She will be mine. Oh, yes – she will be mine. Welcome to “Brandon Stroud finds his new dream girls” episode 1, as a pair of female Chicago Cubs fans showed up to a game dressed like Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar from Wayne’s World. I’m not sure how to explain how they make me feel, but as soon as I saw them this started playing in my head. Not...

Theo Epstein gives Daniel Bard another chance to see if he can throw strikes

From 2009-2011 (during which time Theo Epstein was the Red Sox GM) Daniel Bard was one of the best set up men in baseball.   And then he mysteriously forgot how to find the plate.  Bard failed as a starter for Boston in 2012, then responded terribly to being demoted to AAA. With Pawtucket he walked 29 batters (and hit another 10) in just 32 innings, with an ERA of 7.03.  This...

Murphy's two-run HR gives Cubs 9-7 win over Marlins

Donnie Murphy hit the go-ahead two-run homer while Dioner Navarro homered and drove in three runs as host Chicago salvaged the finale of a three-game set against Miami. The Cubs trailed by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh before Navarro singled home two runs and Murphy greeted Ryan Webb (2-6) with the decisive blast to left. Starlin Castro added a run-scoring double...

Race to the Top: Winning Games, Losing Ground

The Cubs lost 3 and won 4 games since the last time we checked in, so while this doesn't really qualify as a winning trend, it didn't really help the Cubs in their quest for as high a draft pick as possible: Houston has kept a strong grip on the overall #1 pick, and gained some help when their top offensive threat, catcher Jason Castro, sprained a knee. A second consecutive...

Cubs hit 4 HRs, power past Marlins 9-7 to avoid sweep

CHICAGO (AP) -- Donnie Murphy homered to cap a four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs connected four times Wednesday to beat the Miami Marlins 9-7. Murphy's two-run shot put the Cubs ahead 8-7. Starlin Castro, Dioner Navarro and Ryan Sweeney each added solo home runs for Chicago. The Cubs avoided a sweep and prevented the Marlins from winning four straight...

Illini QB Aaron Bailey: a new favorite Illinois football topic

The talk from Illini Nation around QB Aaron Bailey reminds me of the talk from Chicago Cubs Nation surrounding Javier Baez. Or Albert Almora. Or (insert another Cubs blue chip Minor League prospect’s name here). It’s the same sentiment- accepting that losing, and extreme losing at that, is inevitable in the present. Therefore, instead look to the future and focus on the can...

Theo Epstein Reunites With His Former Reliever Daniel Bard

(Photo/CSSNE) The Chicago Cubs have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. To make room for the reliever, outfielder Cole Gillespie has been designated for assignment by the Cubs. Bard will be reunited with his former General Manager and current Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein from their time together with the Red Sox organization. The former top...
