PLAYERS: Ryan Sweeney
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ryan Sweeney will be placed on the disabled list after breaking a rib on his left side crashing into an outfield wall. Chicago made the announcement Sunday, a day after he was hurt, and said Sweeney will be held out of baseball activities for four-to-six weeks. Sweeney is hitting .295 with four home runs and 15 RBIs since he came up from Triple-A Iowa on May 6. Chicago is off Monday and are expected to put Sweeney on the DL before Tuesday's game at Oakland. Sweeney was injured in the third inning when he jumped and caught a fly ball by Kendrys Morales. ''It's unfortunate. We kind of started to seem to get things going a little bit with the offense, and now we lose a big piece of that,'' Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. ''It's unfortunate for him, too. He's trying to get his career going and getting a chance to play every day. It stinks when those things happen to guys like that who are really good players and getting a chance, and all of a sudden it's taken away for a couple of months.''

2014 Cubs: Can They Compete?

dmick89 has finally been cured! Not of his back problems, but of his boundless optimism for all things Cubs. That article is more-or-less required reading for this article, but I'll very quickly sum it up and say that there isn't a whole lot of hope that the Cubs are going to be actual contenders next year or the year after. I'm not as pessimistic about the Cubs chances...

Chicago Cubs have trade bait

This year is obviously not going to be the year for the Chicago Cubs. With a 35-45 record and three of the best teams in all of baseball in their division, it is going to take a miracle for the Cubs to make the post-season. It’s not that the Cubs have no talent this year, they just haven’t been able to put all of their pieces together at the same time (and the bullpen piece is...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-28-13

Iowa Cubs 5 @ Omaha Storm Chasers 1 Dave Sappelt went 3-5 with a double. Logan Watkins had a 4-5 day. Darnell McDonald, Luis Flores, and Ty Wright were all 2-5, Flores adding a double. Junior Lake was the only I-Cub without a hit, and he walked once. The roster had 16 hits with only 2 going for extra bases, which seems to happen a ton with this club. Chris Rusin had a good rebound...

Someone actually wants Carlos Marmol?

A few days ago, the Cubs finally cried “uncle” and designated Carlos Marmol for assignment, effectively saying their farewells to one of the most dominant yet terrible relievers in Cubs history.  There was no way in hell the Cubs were getting anything of consequence back for Marmol in a trade, and now that Marmol resides in DFA limbo (he has to sit ten days before he can be...

Carlos Marmol: A look back on his Chicago Cubs career

On Tuesday the Chicago Cubs announced that relief pitcher Carlos Marmol was designated for assignment. The former all-star has had trouble in each of the last three seasons, including his lackluster performance so far this year. Let’s take a look back at Marmol’s career with the Chicago Cubs organization. The beginning. Carlos Marmol was signed by the Cubs as an amateur free...

Matt Garza and 2013 International Free Agency

Nice try, Eloy. You can’t have plus-plus power and be gritty. The 2013 international free agency signing period starts July 2nd (Hey, that's tomorrow!). All international players who turn 16 by August 31st are eligible for free agency. Top prospects from Latin America typically sign shortly after they turn 16. Korean and Taiwanese prospects, on the other hand, are usually...

Dodgers and Cubs working on Carlos Marmol trade

credit: getty images The Chicago Cubs designated Carlos Marmol for assignment on June 25 giving the team ten days to trade their one time closer. With nearly $5 million owed to Marmol for the remainder of this season the Cubs have every reason to simply give away Marmol. Surprisingly there is one team interested in Marmol, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gordon Wittenmeyer reports that...

L.A. Kings Mascot Not Exactly a Fan Of Carlos Marmol

Word got out on Monday that the Dodgers were giving serious thought to bringing on Cubs’ reliever Carlos Marmol, who was designated for assignment just last week. Bailey The Lion, the Kings mascot, was one of the folks who heard the rumor and he took to Twitter to express his not so fond ideas on the potential move. Carlos Marmol… DON'T DO IT DODGERS — Bailey LA Kings...

Chicago Cubs throwbacks for game against Seattle Mariners

The Chicago Cubs are going to be wearing these throwback uniforms against the Seattle Mariners for their weekend series starting on June 29th.  The jerseys are an updated version of their 1909 uniforms and they look pretty good.  It’s always great when teams mix up their uniforms with some throwbacks. Cubs 5, Mariners 3(11)

Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Nate Schierholtz opened the 11th with a drag bunt off Oliver Perez (2-2). Soriano then connected on a 1-2 pitch over the center-field wall, his ninth. That ended a 14-game scoreless streak for Perez. The Mariners had tied the game with two outs...

Video: Mike Zunino hits first career walk-off hit to beat Chicago Cubs

It took 10 innings and a walk-off hit from catcher Mike Zunino for the Seattle Mariners to finally send those loveable losers, the Chicago Cubs, home for their Friday night.

LA Kings mascot cautions Dodgers against Carlos Marmol trade

A report on Monday said the Los Angeles Dodgers were closing in on a trade for Carlos Marmol, whom the Chicago Cubs designated for assignment last week. Marmol has been pretty bad this season — and the last two for that matter — so many were wondering why the Dodgers would want him. He is [...]

Almost Halfway

Three months into the 2013 season, we’ve seen many things happen.  We’ve seen quality start after quality start blown by an inconsistent bullpen.  We’ve seen the departure of some not-so-popular Cubs players.  We’ve seen some bad baseball.  Yet, despite all this, the Cubs are still 35-45, only 10 games under .500, with a five-win improvement over the previous season after...
