Chicago Cubs prospect Jorge Soler was reportedly ejected from a minor league game on Wednesday night after he was involved in a bench-clearing incident. Initial reports claim Soler attacked the opposing dugout with a bat. Yikes. Details are still a little vague, but Soler’s Daytona Cubs were facing the Clearwater Threshers in a High-A matchup. In the seventh inning Soler and Clearwater second baseman Carlos Alonso got tied up after an inning-ending double play. Alonso apparently stepped on Soler, which escalated the situation. Benches cleared but no punches were thrown. Then, after everyone returned to the dugout, Soler grabbed a bat and charged Clearwater’s dugout and went after the team with a bat. He had to be pulled away from the opposing dugout by teammate Javier Baez and hitting coach Mariano Duncan. Josh Timmers tweeted about the entire thing, then wrote about it on Bleed Cubbie Blue, if you want his whole story. Soler is a 21-year-old outfielder who defected from Cuba in 2011, then signed a nine-year, $30 million contract in June of last year. He is widely considered the franchise’s top prospect and is thought to be on the fast track to the big leagues. We’re pretty confident Mr. Soler can expect a pretty lengthy suspension coming from this incident. We’ll update as more details become available.
