Cubs Release SS Sergio Alcantara from Triple-A Iowa
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs are sifting their way through the newly acquired talent from the MLB Draft. In addition, players are earning promotions and requiring others to either move on or step up to remain with the organization. In the case of Sergio Alcantara, the shortstop has been released from Triple-A Iowa. Alcantara made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020, but the last few years have featured two stints with the Cubs organization.

Alcantara is most remembered for his hot stretch in 2021 when he was originally called up by the Cubs. He finished the season as a .630 OPS player, but provided some meaningful offense when he was first called up by Chicago.

In 2023, Alcantara has spent the entirety of the season with Triple-A Iowa. In 64 games, Alcantara slashed .270/.364/.419 with six home runs and 32 RBI. Despite being a solid player, the release likely comes with a better opportunity for Alcantara, whether it is in a different league overseas or just another team in MLB. In addition, it opens up another spot in Iowa for the Cubs to promote one of their up and coming prospects. Who that will be remains a mystery, but the possibility now arrises.
