Cubs Send Frank Schwindel to Iowa After Win

Following a bounce-back 6-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday night, the Chicago Cubs sent first baseman Frank Schwindel down to Triple-A Iowa. Schwindel has struggled in 2022 and has begun losing playing time at first base to Patrick Wisdom, who is regularly a third baseman.

The move doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. The 30-year-old is having a brutal season at the plate and the team’s acquisition of outfielder Franmil Reyes certainly crowds the roster. With Schwindel seemingly becoming the odd man out, sending him down is probably the right move.

In 75 games, Schwindel is slashing .229/.277/.358 with eight home runs and 36 RBI. After a magical run at the end of last season, the “Frank the Tank” magic appears to have worn off. Having Schwindel in Iowa is certainly good depth in the event of an injury, but with players like Nelson Velazquez and Christopher Morel playing so well, they’re valued more on the roster than Frank is.

The Cubs and Nationals do battle again on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. With an early game on Wednesday, the Cubs will then venture to Dyersville, Iowa for the Field of Dreams game against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.
