#Cubs signed former #Marlins Chris Coghlan to minor lge deal. $800G if make majors, $250G in PA bonuses. Can opt out on 6/15 if not in MLB — Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) January 15, 2014 Coghlan won the Rookie of the Year voting in 2009, when he slashed .321/.390/.460 (aided and abetted by a .368 BABIP). Since then, he's taken turns being injured and ineffective. He tore his meniscus in 2010 and was never really the same. Last season, he was a super-utility guy, playing at least 1 game at 2B, 3B, LF, CF, and RF. He was a 3B in college and is not a great fielder, but I guess he's got as good a chance as anyone to be the 25th man on this roster and romantic, hot-chocolate-by-the-fire types can always dream on a return to the form he took a half-decade ago. He bats lefty, so he basically replaces Brian Bogusevic on our roster.  You can now consider Justin Ruggiano a freeroll.

Gallery: The worst defunct MLB mascots

The backlash towards new Chicago Cubs mascot Clark the Cub has been swift, and it has been ugly. Cubs fans are incensed, and rival fans are taking pleasure in mocking Chicago's latest misstep. But Clark the Cub isn't the first mascot that has gotten an intense amount of hate - in fact, he's the latest in a long line of mascots that has earned the ire of their respective...

TV report shows Photoshop version of Chicago Cubs mascot that included genitalia (video)

The Chicago Cubs unveiled the team’s brand-spanking (no pun intended, in light of the story that follows) new mascot to the masses this week. His name is Clark the Cub and if anything, Clark is an adorable, kid-friendly mascot that is sure to entertain the youngsters at games at Wrigley Field for years to come. […]The post TV report shows Photoshop version of Chicago Cubs mascot...

Steamer Projects: Chicago Cubs Prospects

Earlier today, polite and Canadian and polite Marc Hulet published his 2014 organizational prospect list for the Chicago Cubs. It goes without saying that, in composing such a list, Hulet has considered the overall future value those prospects might be expected to provide either to the Cubs or whatever other organizations to which they might […]

Cubs Convention (AKA The Absolute High Point of the 2014 Season) This Weekend

Cubs fans will come from near and far to the Sheraton downtown to stand in ridiculously long autograph lines, pack ballrooms to catch a glimpse of former Cubs middle-relievers, and ask really stupid questions when given the opportunity. It's the Cubs Convention! Typically, I've broken down the various sessions and made little jokes, but I'm not going to do that because...

Chicago Cubs mascot angers fans.

For the first time in over a century, the Chicago Cubs will have an official team mascot. The Cubs officially unveiled Clark the Cub on Monday and fans are upset. “The Cubs are thrilled to welcome Clark as the teams official mascot,” Cubs senior director of marketing Alison Miller announced. “Clark is a young, friendly Cub who can’t wait to interact with our other young Cubs...

CSN Mid-Atlantic shows X-rated version of Clark the Cub

New Chicago Cubs mascot Clark the Cub is getting a lot of bad press online - and for good reason. The damn thing is a disaster. On Monday, Deadspin put together a Photoshop contest about the new mascot that resulted in some very non-worksafe images being created by their readers. During Tuesday night's Sports Talk show on CSN Mid-Atlantic, the network used one of the pictures...

Marc Hulet’s Top 10 prospects

I'm not a huge fan of the Hulet rankings, but they are still worth something. His Cubs list is right here, and it's interesting at the end. 1. Javier Baez (70) 2. Kris Bryant (70) 3. Albert Almora (65) 4. Jorge Soler (60) 5. Arismendy Alcantara (60) 6. Pierce Johnson (55) 7. C.J. Edwards (55) 8. Dan Vogelbach (55) The Career Outlook: The young hitter should be ready...

Jordany Valdespin continues to be a team-first player

Jordany Valdespin is not exactly the most user-friendly guy around. Last May he angered the Pirates by showboating after hitting a home run . . . with his team down 7-1. Last summer he threw a temper tantrum after learning he was being demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas. After going down to Vegas he helped start a benches-clearing brawl. Long before all of that he was said to be unpopular...

Valdespin Upset After Winter League Team Pinch-Hits For Him

Miami Marlins infielder Jordany Valdespin has left his team in the Dominican Winter League after becoming infuriated when his manager pinch-hit for him in a playoff game this past weekend. The news was reported by ESPN Deportes’ Enrique Rojas. Valdespin hit only .167/.316/.612 in 108 regular season at bats for the Tigres del Licey with three home runs and was struggling...

MLB mascots welcome Clark the Cub on Twitter

The Cubs have been pretty quiet this offseason, but they certainly made news on Monday with the introduction of Clark the Cub, the team’s first mascot in its 138-year history. Not surprisingly, the Twitterverse was buzzing over the bear with the backwards baseball cap and the already sad look in his blue eyes. Though Cubs fans did not immediately embrace the team’s newest acquisition...

Cubs New Mascot: Clark

So much to unpack.  The Cubs, one of a handful of MLB teams without a mascot (Dodgers, Yankees, Angels) announced yesterday that they've filled the role with 'Clark', described as "young, friendly Cub who can't wait to interact with other young Cub fans". Drawings were released; he's been spotted in the wild.  1) Clark is much better suited...

Top 5 Pics Of The Week

TOP 5 PICS OF THE WEEK   CLARK THE CUB The Chicago Cubs introduced Clark, the new (and first) mascot in franchise history. While Clark clearly is aimed at kids, and will not be a t-shirt canon shooting mascot hanging out on the dugout, fans were quick to jump on the idea. Clark was already visiting sick patients at the hospital with numerous Cubs prospects on Monday. SOURCE:...
