Cubs Sign RHP David Robertson, Send Codi Heuer to 60-Day IL

The reclamation projects continue for the Chicago Cubs. Robertson will enter his age-37 season after pitching briefly with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. The righty missed all of the 2020 season due to Tommy John recovery, an injury he suffered in 2019 with the Philadelphia Phillies after only seven games pitched.

David Robertson has a 2.93 ERA across 13 MLB seasons as a reliever. He pitched 12 regular-season innings with the Rays last year upon his return and gave them quality innings in the playoffs. In the ALDS, Robertson tossed four scoreless innings with two strikeouts and only one walk.

The fact that he signed an MLB contract means there must be some life in his arm, even at the back end of his career. If his 2021 postseason is a sign of things to come, this could be an under-the-radar move for the North Siders in 2022.

Codi Heuer

On a sour note, the team placed right-handed hurler Codi Heuer on the 60-day injured list. Heuer posted a picture to his Instagram indicating a Tommy John injury on March 8, so this news doesn’t come as a shock. But the sting still remains.

Hopefully, the additions of Jesse Chavez, Chris Martin, Steven Brault, and now Robertson will fill the void.
