This is the second in my 4-part series on the Cubs Spring Training Battles. Last week I took a look at the 5th outfielder battle. This week I'll take a look at an equally exciting battle, the utility infielder spot.
The Contenders
Darwin Barney - Barney was a late-season call up in 2010 and impressed manager Mike Quade in his short stint with the team. In his 30 games with the club, he split his time between short (11 games), second (10) and third (6). In 4 minor league seasons, he hit .286/.334/.374. He doesn't have much power or speed, but is young and versatile.
Augie Ojeda - Ojeda returns to the Cubs (on a minor league deal) after spending parts of 2000-2003 with the team. Ojeda compiled a .196/.267/.275 slash line with the Cubs and a career line of .234/.320/.313, not exactly numbers to write home about. Like Barney, he can play short, third and second and, like Barney, he doesn't possess much power or speed.
